Position Summary

The Corps Ministries Assistant must be a uniform team member committed to the Santa Barbara, who will participate in the leadership and development of assigned ministries that are given oversight by the Corps. Ministries include but not limited to Celebrate Recovery, Family Fun Fellowship, Sunday Morning Responsibilities, Special events at the corps, providing oversight to local Bible Study and Discipleship Groups and new Corps ministries that will be developing.

Essential Functions

Vocational engagement as an employee of The Salvation Army is a position of sacred trust - representing, nurturing, protecting and advancing the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army; and serving the needs of people in our community with dignity and respect. Conduct on and off the job must sustain a positive impact on The Salvation Army's religious goals, programs and public image.

  • To understand all dimensions of Salvation Army mission and purpose toward the outcome of awareness, cohesiveness and effective guest services.
  • To create a safe, engaging environment for Salvation Army associates, guests, members, volunteers, partners and vendors.
  • To provide active support of, and participation in all Salvation Army campaigns and initiatives.
  • To develop appropriate relationships and maintain appropriate relationship boundaries with other Salvation Army associates, guests, members, volunteers, partners and vendors.
  • To communicate in an appropriate, professional, responsive and supportive manner.
  • Effective interpersonal and electronic communication is essential for mission and purpose.
  • Interpersonal communication for day-to-day operational needs is preferred.
  • Direct, thoughtful communication for the resolution of questions or conflicts is expected.
  • Electronic communication - email, texts, etc. - is official communication; and supports and confirms interpersonal communication.
  • Deference to and public support of group decisions and each other's scope of expertise, position and responsibilities must be maintained.
  • To maintain appropriate confidentiality.
  • Some agreements, ideas, processes, or other forms of sensitive information are revealed to certain individuals who are in positions of responsibility or are in possession of qualities or skills that make it necessary for them to know such confidential matters. Such information must be maintained in confidence.
  • To complete annual, advanced training to include, but not limited to: Protecting the Mission, Sexual Harassment, and others as determined.

Specific Duties:

Community Outreach



  • Park ministry
  • Recovery ministry
  • Coordination with other local homeless services
  • Coordination with workforce development organizations
  • Life Skills


Family Fun Fellowship



  • Be the leader of the bi-weekly Family Fun Fellowship program
  • Coordinate programs, music, and activities on and off-site
  • Recruit families from Sunday worship services, Friday Celebrate Recovery and building rentals to attend program.
  • Coordinate dinner schedules with soldier volunteers from Sunday worship services
  • Recruit volunteers, new families and individuals from building rentals who may be seeking a church home.
  • Keep Relevant Statistics


CCM:



  • Assist the Corps Officer with contacting nursing homes in the community to schedule and coordinate visits with CCM members (including Christmas Visitation).
  • Assist the Corps Officer with visitations for corps members and family who are ill or hospitalized.
  • Coordinate Annual CCM Sunday enrolling new members and celebrating Long Service
  • Keep Relevant Statistics


Recovery Ministry



  • Implement at least two weekly 12-step meeting on the premises
  • Coordinate with recovery community to plan outreach activities for those in recovery
  • Serve as a bridge between Hospitality House and Corps
  • Serve as bridge between recovery ministries and corps
  • Teach Kingsmen
  • Facilitate Celebrate Recovery


Christmas:



  • Secure sites within the area assigned by contacting store managers, make arrangements where necessary and provide Certificate of Insurance, agreements and contracts.
  • Review the current inventory of kettle equipment and make repairs or replacements where necessary.
  • Coordinate with HR Coordinator to recruit kettle workers and ensure that proper documentation is completed and submitted to divisional headquarters for approval.
  • Work with the Corps Officers on the counting, reporting and banking of money raised through the program.
  • Contact and schedule bell ringers at available sites through the kettle season.
  • Collect all kettles every day. Sign time sheets of bell ringers to verify hours worked.
  • Ensure each bell ringer receives a paycheck on time.
  • At the end of the season make sure that all kettle equipment is secured in storage and send thank you letters to those who have allowed the Army to place kettles at their locations.
  • Prepare a brief that outlines every detail of the program for future use and review.


Special Event Logistics Coordinator for Corps Outreach Events



  • Assist with logistics in planning special events including set up, advertising, operations and clean up
  • Drive shuttle bus as needed


Sunday Morning Responsibilities



  • Keep up to date records of groups and facilitate resources as needed
  • Contact and connect with visitors and new members at the corps. Connecting them to a local Bible study group leader and Corps Officer.
  • Wear the uniform each week.
  • Drive HH residents to and from the Sunday morning service.
  • Help lead Sunday School, in-conjunction with local Corps volunteers.
  • Lead the Sunday worship meeting in the Corps Officers' absence
  • Lock/unlock building in Corps Officers' absence
  • Lead Jr. Church
  • Assist in the coordination of local Bible study groups. Helping with resources, development and recruitment.
  • Attend Corps Ministry Meetings as needed
  • Perform other assignments/duties as directed.


Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications



  • High School Diploma required
  • Minimum of five years of ministry experience
  • Valid California driver's license, auto insurance and personal transportation
  • Attention to detail, quality and professionalism
  • Excellent communication skills, including both oral and written.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities



  • Driving Test and pass MVR check
  • A criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
  • Bilingual/Bi-literate English/Spanish preferred.
  • Must have ability to work with, direct, and relate well with co-workers, community members, and guests/clients.
  • Able to function in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment.
  • Must possess good relationship skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some weekends and evenings.
