The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at UC Irvine Health School of Medicine is dedicated to the diagnosis and understanding of human diseases through biomedical and clinical research. Using the latest technologies, our pathologists help advance medicine by finding better ways of diagnosing, managing and treating diseases. The Department is active in supporting research related to brain health and disease.


Your Role on the Team

The Clinical Research Coordination will be a part of team critical to the support of an NIH funded project to help in our understanding of normal human brain function and the
underlying mechanisms of a variety of human neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. In this role, the applicant will be responsible for establishing and maintaining collaborations with multiple procurement sites, contacting various hospital departments to identify potential brain donors, address inclusion/exclusion criteria for the study, to approach donors or families of donors when required, and to arrange and assist in the procurement of brain donation. This is an on-call position that may require traveling to hospitals, medical examiner's offices, and organ procurement sites throughout Southern California for brain procurement. The coordinator will also assist with brain dissection procedures and engage with the Study team investigators and PIs through virtual meetings and managing online folders. The incumbent will provide IRB application support, contribute to outreach and education, and develop partnerships. In addition, the coordinator will assist with arranging brain dissections with neuropathologists at UCIMC, and provide inventory support.. They will also contribute to manuscript preparation and data summaries, and represent the program at community engagement and scientific events.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Be able to be trained to communicate respectfully and with sensitivity regarding brain donation
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the organization
  • Knowledge of human brain anatomy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Bachelor's of Arts or Science
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience experience in tissue procurement
  • Familiar with working with participants or families in a research setting
  • Experience with human brain dissections
  • Experience organizing and working within teams

Preferred:

  • Bilingual: Spanish
  • Ability to drive

Special Conditions:

  • Flexibility with schedule to handle tissue donations
