The Division of Finance and Administration (DFA) provides services and support to over 50,000 students, faculty, and staff with the mission of advancing UCI's brilliant future and the vision of becoming world-class campus partners. DFA serves the university as planning partners, problem solvers, and solutions providers - striving to make it as easy as possible for people to get the services they need, when they need them.

Facilities Management is responsible for the effective operation of Irvine campus buildings, grounds and utilities; for providing a safe, functionally suitable and aesthetic environment in support of academic, research and public service programs of the University. Providing comprehensive management of campus facilities requires the employment of approximately 325 personnel ranging in classification from custodians and groundskeepers to more technical skilled crafts such as electricians and plumbers, and professional design staff and engineers. These services cover more than 150 buildings of approximately 6 million gross square feet, and1,475 acres of grounds. Facilities Management has an annual operating budget exceeding $80 million in expenditures, with operating funds of $30 million and $15 million for reimbursable campus activities. Project Services a construction department within Facilities Management manages a portfolio of major infrastructure and renovation projects totaling $200M per year.


Your Role on the Team

Incumbent drives and operates packar refuse trucks, backhoe, sweeper, tractors, mowers and dump trucks of various sizes in a safe and efficient manner. Collects and disposes of non-hazardous solid waste generated on campus. Collects refuse stored in bins and barrels. Depending on assignment, the solid waste driver collects refuse stored in bins and barrels. Disposes of materials in local landfill or collects and delivers a variety of recyclable materials. Performs primary maintenance by: lubricating and cleaning truck body pivot points; inspecting and checking components and fluid levels of chassis, body and motor (2); checking stress points, tire wear, etc.); reporting any malfunctions and/or service requirements to supervision. Keeps records as requested, i.e. dump tags, service request; charge numbers, etc.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Skill in operation of front loader dump truck.
  • Skill in operation of street sweeper.
  • Skill in operation of backhoe.
  • Skill in operation of light and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in operation of hydraulic/electrical/air controls.
  • Knowledge of refuse collection and disposal techniques.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of Cal-OSHA Safety Requirements/Acts.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with campus staff, faculty, students and public.
  • Ability to lift a 100 lb. load safely.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to prioritize work and complete established schedules.
  • 1-3 years operating refuse collection vehicles and heavy equipment such as packer trucks, backhoes, sweepers, tractors, and mowers in a commercial or institutional setting.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of recycling programs/procedures.
  • Possess a CPR training certificate.

Special Conditions:

  • Body mobility and/or strength to climb on, operate, clean heavy equipment; to pick up paper and objects on the ground; to shovel, lift, push or pull heavy items; to reach hydraulic controls; to get into and out of high
  • Vehicles frequently.
  • Must be available to work overtime, such as weekends, non-standard hours, variable shifts, and holidays. Must be able to work in inclement weather work-related conditions, and with crews or independently.
  • Must possess a Class B California Driver's license.
  • Must be able to provide a clean DMV record.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $24.92-$29.02 (Hourly).
