The department of Facilities and Services at WVU Keyser is currently accepting applications for a Landscape Worker.

About the Opportunity

Under the supervision of Grounds Supervisor, this position provides a variety of support services to maintain the exterior appearance of Potomac State College campus to ensure a neat, clean, aesthetically pleasing environment. Areas of responsibility include exterior of buildings, lawns. planting beds, and general campus grounds following established standard procedures, techniques. and safety requirements. Other work as assigned to support general campus functions and needs.

This work involves adhering to established standard procedures, techniques, and safety requirements with some judgment required to interpret instructions.

What You'll Do

Grounds



  • Maintain lawn by mowing, seeding, and aerating turf.
  • Trim and edge around trees, flower beds, buildings and walkways.
  • Water lawns, shrubs, and ornamental gardens as needed during extended dry periods.
  • Report pest problems on turf, ground covers, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Collect soil samples as needed for testing to determine mineral composition to ensure adequate support for plants and greenery. Apply compounds and materials to correct deficiencies as assigned.
  • Prepare soil for plantings by tilling and/or digging, adding topsoil, fertilizer, peat moss, compost. vermiculite, and other additives to condition the soil.
  • Plant ornamentals, flowers, shrubs, and trees following recommended depth and spacing to enhance survival rate.
  • Trim and prune shrubs and trees; weed and thin ornamentals to shape and improve growth as assigned.
  • Remove leaves from beds and grounds as assigned.
  • Assist with landscape construction as assigned. Work may include operating jackhammers to remove broken sidewalks; mixing, pouring, and spreading concrete, asphalt, or gravel; and digging holes and/or trenches for irrigation and drainage systems.
  • May be required to operate various hand and power tools in the performance of duties such as rakes, shovels, dollies, hand trucks, lawn mowers, weed eaters, Paint, patch interior walls etc.


Snow Removal



  • Clear snow and/or ice from sidewalks. steps, road, and parking lots as assigned. Equipment may include blowers, shovels, power broom. tractor, or truck.
  • Spread deicers and abrasives as needed. Application may be hand spread, small portable spreader, large, mounted spreader, or by other means determined by supervisor.
  • Must be available by phone 24/7 to respond to emergency situations.


Trash Management



  • Daily remove trash from receptacles across campus and replace liners and lids to control litter.
  • Pick up trash and debris from around campus and dispose of property.
  • Ensure trash and recycling bins are stored and used property. Move items that are in the wrong bin to the correct bin as needed.


General Responsibilities



  • Work as part of a cohesive team to provide excellent service, protect University resources, and build positive working relationships with other team members, students, faculty, staff, vendors, and neighbors.
  • Assist with moving furniture, equipment, and special event set-ups as assigned.
  • Receive deliveries as needed, checking delivery ticket against items received, unload trucks, deliver items across campus, and ensures paperwork is placed in the correct office bin.
  • Use equipment following best practice standards to ensure safe handling and equipment maintenance.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment by cleaning. refurbishing, and storing securely
  • Recommend to supervisor all needs for materials and parts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or directed.
  • Move, set up, rearrange, assemble, or disassemble desks, tables, chairs, displays and other related equipment using a dolly, hand cart, or physically lifting objects.
  • Perform set-ups or rearrangement, of tables, chairs, and other equipment for special events.
  • Attend training classes, seminars, and other meetings to learn new techniques and procedures and to remain current in all safety requirements.


Pay Grade: 10

Work Hours: MON - FRI 7:00am to 3:00pm

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of directly related experience
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



  • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to rapidly learn custodial, grounds keeping, and labor methods, procedures, and safety principles.
  • Ability to operate all related labor supporting equipment, basic grounds keeping equipment, and commercial custodial equipment.
  • Ability to work on ladders.
  • Physical capability to perform duties of the position including long periods of standing and walking, bending, stooping, and climbing, and lifting of heavy items weighing approximately 50 to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals (i.e. cleaning solutions), and variations in indoor temperatures and outside weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Ability how to operate powered custodial equipment.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and carry items as necessary.
  • Ability to learn how to apply custodial products (cleaners, surface finishes, and disinfectants).
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to manage time and resources effectively.
  • Ability to operate a computer and accurately enter information.
  • Lifting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping daily.
  • Work requires eye/hand coordination in the operation of commercial custodial equipment, basic ground keeping equipment & labor supporting equipment.
