Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm. We plan, design, permit, mitigate, and restore for projects across our communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands. We are looking for an experienced, part-time Aquatic Scientistto join our NorCal team-someone with a passion for safely working on boats and a strong desire to conduct aquatic science field investigations. The position will be responsible for the safe operation of research vessels and provide leadership and oversight on technical field deployments. The Aquatic Scientist will also aid in ensuring that our team has the training, support, and functioning equipment necessary to conduct our work. Qualified candidates will have experience and professional certifications in boat operation, safety, and a strong background in the fish and aquatic science fieldwork. This is a part-time opportunity that will include approximately 70% fieldwork in the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area. Maintenance work may involve upkeep and repair of boats and scientific equipment at our West Sacramento warehouse, the Sacramento Marina, or elsewhere within the region. This position would commence on August 18, 2025.

This role will support and/or lead a variety of job duties, primarily fisheries surveys/field work and other aquatic (e.g., water quality, hydrology) surveys. In addition to the safe operation of boats to support project work. The position will involve extensive fieldwork, both locally and potentially on overnight assignments.

Who You Are



  • A bachelor's degree in the Natural Sciences field is required. A master's degree is desired.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience is required especially aquatic science research equipment and instrumentation.
  • Motorboat Operator Certification is required. First Aid and CRP certification is also a must.
  • You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; and are able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • You are confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments.
  • Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas. You may be exposed to inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions. Some night and/or weekend work may be required.


What You Will Do for ESA



  • Lead crews of aquatic scientists conducting field research and monitoring.
  • Contribute to monitoring design and scheduling efforts.
  • Collaborate with a team of multidisciplinary scientists.
  • Maintain and deploy scientific equipment.
  • Operate and maintain outboard vessels, including but not limited to prop boats, jet boats, from 16 to 40 feet in length.

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position, the range is approximately as listed based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including but not limited to an individual's related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.
