General Responsibilities |
Coordinates, designs, plants, maintains, and harvests the
HCC garden. Provides fresh produce to the Food Pantry (in-season). Works with internal and external partners (Plant Operations, Student Life/Food Pantry, Culinary Program, Howard County Master Gardeners, Howard County Food Bank, etc.) and facilitates and supervises volunteer/learning opportunities and garden activities. |
Work Performed |
Research of organic growing techniques (including integrated pest management), tools and
practices
Maintain a planting, harvesting, and production logs and crop rotations plan
Create a planting and harvesting schedule plan for garden, based in general on the University of Maryland Extension Recommended Vegetable Cultivars for Maryland Gardens
Provide information to supervisor for budget preparation
Conduct weekly gardening activities including but not limited to: sowing, transplanting,
weeding, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, composting, and pest control using integrated pest
management techniques
Purchase seeds, transplants, supplies, tools and equipment within budget constraints
Plan and coordinate harvests with partners (
HCC food pantry, Howard County Food Bank,
CSA, Roving Radish, etc.)
Coordinate crop selection with partners
Develop and maintain working relationship with partners
Cultivate a friendly, inviting, and engaging learning environment
Provide training in-garden activities for volunteers, interns, students, faculty, and staff
Maintain an ongoing list of garden activities for staff, students, and volunteers
Coordinate maintenance, repairs, and improvement through Plant operations
Maintain a safe work environment and first aid supplies |

Other Knowledge Required |
A minimum of 2 years of experience in organic vegetable/fruit production, demonstrated success
in coordinating and supervising volunteers, well organized, flexible, responsible and highly
motivated individual with strong written and verbal communication skills. Familiarity and
capability to use email, internet and other electronic communication. Valid Maryland driver's license. |
Working Conditions |
Fast-paced, deadline driven environment. Periodic local distance travel. Regular attendance is
a requirement for this position. |
