JOB SUMMARY



  • In collaboration with Supervisors, develop and maintain SOPs, training guides, Tip Sheets, Decision Trees, etc.
  • Manage team / staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Distribute workload among the team, re-evaluating periodically.
  • Thorough documentation of staff education, 1 on 1 communications, etc.
  • Regular review of WQs (Active and Deferred tabs) to look for aging charges, lack of detailed notes, etc., and work with staff to catch up and clear charges from charge review.
  • Periodic shadowing, review of workflows and processes to identify opportunities for improvement and update SOPs as needed.
  • Manage timecards and time off requests for assigned staff in partnership with Supervisors to ensure proper coverage and plan.
  • Works with assigned staff on Productivity numbers, tracking, etc.
  • Guide team on proper approaches (verification, authorizations, referrals, Epic processes, denial follow up, charge entry, and other processes).
  • Partner with department Coding Specialist II/III representative to ensure staff receive guidance on any coding concerns.
  • Be a resource to Coders and assist with vetting and guidance on coding approaches, working and responding to audits.
  • Review identified billing concerns and work with staff to ensure proper corrections when needed.
  • Coordinates training and development of staff as necessary.
  • Work with staff to establishes goals, complete staff evaluations and complete quality control activities; develops and/or approves schedules, priorities, and standards for achieving goals.



Work Shift: Monday-Friday. This position is mostly remote, and candidate will need to come into the office periodically. Candidate must live in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required



  • Education
    Bachelor's Degree In Health Information Management or closely related field or
    Associate's Degree In Health Information Management and/or closely related field or
    High School Diploma Or equivalent


  • Experience
    3 years Progressive coding experience with Bachelor's Degree or
    5 years Progressive coding experience with Associate's Degree or
    7 years Progressive coding experience with High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience must include
    1 year in a lead capacity.


Preferred



  • Experience
    Knowledge of Correct Coding Initiatives (CCI), Epic electronic health record systems and 3M coding software


  • Licenses and Certifications
    (CPC) CERT PROFESSIONAL CODER Upon Hire or
    (CCS-P) CERT CODING SPCLST PHY BA Upon Hire or
    (CCS) CERT CODING SPECIALIST Upon Hire


JOB DUTIES



  • Supervises all coding specialists which includes hiring, onboarding, performance appraisals and disciplinary action. Coordinates work schedules and tasks for optimal productivity and cross coverage. Assures consistent/annual education training and certification of all staff members.
  • Performs accurate and timely review, coding and abstracting of UTSW accounts utilizing ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 code sets as indicated and according to coding team procedures.
  • Performs coding activities in a manner that meets productivity and quality standards as established by the coding leadership.
  • Maintains current understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and coding guidelines and grows knowledge through participation in continuing education programs. Maintains understanding of teaching physician documentation guidelines.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the intricacies of the various patient types cared for at UTSW (inpatient, same day surgery, interventional procedures, etc.) so work assignment adjustments can be made with little workflow disruption and coding coverage can be appropriately provided.
  • Assists in upholding coding team expectations, customer service standards, professionalism, operating procedures, processes and other team strategies and goals. Assist in promoting a culture of support, continuous learning and team work. Adheres to all UTSW and departmental policies and procedures to include the Remote Coding Agreement where applicable.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
