Position Summary

Organization: YMCA of Central New Mexico

Location: Various Locations In Albuquerque - Heights to Westside

An Off-Campus Work-Study Position - MUST have a Work-Study Award

The
Reading Tutor will work primarily with young children, especially those in
pre-literacy stages (typically 3rd grade and under), to enhance their reading
and comprehension skills. Reading sessions may be provided one-on-one or in
group settings during YMCA programs and community events.

The
YMCA of Central New Mexico is committed to strengthening communities through
youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As part of our
mission, this position supports literacy and education for children,
particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. After reading
sessions, children may have the opportunity to take a book home to continue developing
a love of reading.

It
is essential that the Reading Tutor motivates children to read, makes learning
fun, and fosters a welcoming and supportive environment.

Responsibilities:

Implement
a small-group early literacy curriculum.
Read
to groups of ten or more children.
Engage
and maintain the attention of young children during sessions.
Develop
and implement literacy activities to prepare children for future academic
success.
Work
with children from disadvantaged backgrounds who are reading below grade
level.
Tutor
children on reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar.
Support
children who are English Language Learners (ESL).
Provide
intensive literacy instruction to children who may be at risk due to low
literacy skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Qualifications:
High
school diploma or equivalent required.

be available to work weekend events as scheduled.
