The High Energy Theory Group (HET) has active programs in many areas of theoretical particle physics. There are strong efforts in neutrino physics, Beyond the Standard Model phenomenology, precision calculations for the LHC and intensity frontier, overlaps of particle physics and cosmology, and lattice gauge theory. The lattice efforts span weak interaction physics, precision calculations of (g-2) and PDF determinations, and the development of new algorithms, among others.

Position Description

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research focused on precision tests of the Standard Model and/or beyond the Standard Model physics at the proposed Electron-Ion collider. Priority will be given to those whose research proposal demonstrates high intellectual merit and the willingness to use machine learning and/or AI techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Successful candidates are expected to develop an impactful research portfolio that includes studies for the Electron-Ion collider.
  • Propose, plan and perform scientific investigations in pursuit of scientific and technological excellence in all aspects of Particle Physics.
  • Research experience demonstrated through a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proven ability for disseminating research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Candidates should have a Ph.D. in theoretical physics with demonstrated expertise in the area of high energy physics.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated abilities in advanced computational techniques.
  • Application of strong analytical and critical thinking skills and problem-solving efforts to formulate high-quality research ideas and directions in collaboration with mentors in the HET Group.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate research progress, challenges, achievements, and engage within and beyond the group with new potential collaborations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Familiarity with cutting-edge tools and techniques used in high-energy computations
  • Demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals and delivery of presentations.

Other Information:

  • Candidates must have completed all degree requirements by the commencement of the employment.
  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $71500 - $81500 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
  • Initial 3 year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding.
  • This is a fully onsite position located at BNL
