This position may be filled as an Engineer III or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the experience level of the selected candidate.

Duke Energy Plaza, Charlotte, NC is the preferred location for this position. Other North Carolina locations, including Duke Energy's regional headquarters, may be considered.

PMC is the Project Management and Construction group within Duke Energy, responsible for building our new power generation assets and is in the early stages of the largest buildout in the history of the company.As part of Duke Energy's broader strategy to meet rising customer demand and decarbonize the grid, PMC is actively planning and building renewable solar and bulk energy storage, new simple and combined cycle turbines, as well as developing projects for advanced nuclear, pumped storage hydro, and other emerging technologies. PMC is accountable for the development, design, construction, and commissioning of new generating facilities.

Project Engineering is responsible for technical management of all phases of project planning and execution to ensure project success factors are met. These include but are not limited to scope, schedule, cost, quality, environmental, safety, communications, security, and integration. This position is typically under the general direction of a Project Director or Senior PM in a matrixed project organization.

The Project Engineer provides leadership of engineers and technical staff within PMC as well as other internal stakeholders for the analysis, development, design and construction of regulated new generation projects. Additionally, this position obtains and manages technical consultants and contingent labor, as needed, to meet team demands.

The Project Engineer serves as the unifying agent providing technical leadership, decision making, management, guidance, direction, coordination, and overall control of technical aspects of projects in accordance with established policies, procedures, systems, and requirements of the Company. Through their technical leadership, the incumbent serves as the technical conscience through all phases of project execution, from development through design, construction, commissioning, and turnover.

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied. At this level, the Project Engineer is typically assigned a portfolio of projects with Low to Moderate levels of risk (e.g. Solar, BESS, Solar plus BESS, etc.) that impact various levels of the Company, Senior Management, or External Agencies.

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.

At Senior level, the Project Engineer is typically assigned a portfolio of projects with Moderate to High levels of risk that involve team members who are sourced from multiple organizations, rely on multiple interdependent vendors, and stakeholders that include Senior Management, External Agencies, and likely the Board of Directors (among others).

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity,

  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities,

  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team,

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity,

  • Conducts engineering and related studies

  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems,

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies,

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,

  • Maintains accurate records and files, and

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic/Required Qualifications - Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience.

Basic/Required Qualifications - Senior Engineer

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience and state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) OR

  • Minimum 6 years of relevant engineering experience without state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry: especiallySolar, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and Solar plus BESS

  • Experience in utility scale electrical construction

  • Familiarity with components of construction associated with Solar, BESS, and Solar plus BESS installation

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Willingness to travel the geographic territories of Duke Energy as projects may be system wide. Total travel approaching 50% (2-3 days per week) for regionally assigned projects; travel 5-15% for projects in other territories, when assigned.

  • Hybrid with expectation for frequent travel to PMC project sites, Duke Energy power generating stations, and other Duke Energy facilities.

  • Position is typically field-based for large and long duration projects after construction start

Mobility Classification

The classification of Hybrid Worker carries the expectation of working from the assigned work location or project sites at least three days per week to promote durable professional relationships and support ongoing career development.
