Main Duties & Responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY: Under general
direction with supervision and frequent review sets up and operates a centerless
grinding machine to grind external or internal cylindrical or tapered surfaces,
angles, contours etc. of various metal workpieces to blueprint
specifications and exacting tolerances. Determines sequences of grinding operations,
the amount of cut, the dressing of wheel, etc. to perform work assignments. May perform rework of
parts produced.
DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessitated by Company production requirements.
- Under supervision sets-up and operates various grinders. Mounts grinding wheels, regulating wheels, etc. per requirements of task. Dresses wheels to specifications. Sets specific grinding speeds, feed rates and spacings per task requirements. Selects proper abrasive wheels, holding fixtures, etc. and determines the amount of passes to take to optimize efficiency of equipment/machines. Measures, marks and scribes stock for grinding.
- Plans sequence of operations. Applies a knowledge of shop theory, * hop practices etc. for grinding operations.
- Verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances to specifications. Uses various precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc. Grinding to exacting tolerances of .0005. May perform 1st article inspection.
- Reads and interprets documents such as blueprints, sketches, models or descriptions, or works from verbal orders, and visualizes product to determine dimensions, tolerances and final configuration of parts to be ground.
- Provides necessary counts, processes documentation correctly, and maintains daily production logs using computer software applications or production worksheets. Keeps interim records for subassemblies, material, tooling, rework, etc. while in the cell.
- Works as an active team member by participating
in problem solving, team building, and all other team activities to improve the
processes, productivity, quality, etc. of the production
operations in a cell. Uses interpersonal
skills as well as good written and verbal communications. Assists other cell members as required
Equipment/Process Responsibilities -
Performs duties where property, tools, equipment or machines may be damaged, or
man hours lost through improper daily maintenance or attention to processing.
Assists in set up and calibration of a grinding machines for the jobs performed.
Maintains machine.
Material or
Product Responsibilities -
Performs duties that require close attention to work and supporting
documentation specifications and other requirements. Responsibility for
accuracy of parts machined. Visually and/or with measuring instruments, checks
work performed for proper results.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Environmental
Surroundings - Work is in
a machine shop environment where noise, temperature fluctuations, the
repetitive nature of job, etc. are less desirable than in a typical office
environment. Expose to considerable amounts of cutting oils.
Unavoidable
Hazards - Possible
hazards related to cuts, bruises, finger and hand injuries and muscle strains.
Exposure to metalworking fluids and airborne particles. Protective safety wear
and equipment should be worn as appropriate to the task at hand.
EFFORT
Physical - Able to lift up to 50
pounds. Requires strength to adjust requisite equipment to set-up
specifications. Hand and finger manipulation of parts and equipment controls.
Must be able to hand feed all the various size parts to be machined into the
grinder. Able to reach, bend and stretch. Able to use tools required for
machine set-up which may be fatiguing and require extensive physical exertion
for extended periods of time. Most job assignments require standing and/or
sitting for periods exceeding 15 minutes at a time.
Mental -
Work at times is highly repetitive and monotonous. However, set-up and/or
machine repair is varied and may require improvisation and ingenuity. Reasoning
ability required to interpret complex blueprints and documentation of a highly
technical nature. Must be able to draw valid conclusions from a variety of
abstract and concrete variables. Required to run a grinding machine be able to
organize work flow for best efficiency.
Visual - Close attention to detail with moderate
eye concentration over long periods of time. Able to read various precision instruments:
such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc. Must be able to visually check
workpieces for quality.
3rd shift Sunday thru Thursday - 9:00pm to 5:30 am LG 9
Qualifications
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Demonstrated
ability to read and write English of a level required in Company shop documents
and computer software entry and processing requirements. Must be capable of
applying mathematical operations using fractions, decimals, trigonometry and
geometry as required by cell machining operations. Generally equivalent to
journeyman trade school graduate or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
Requires
1-3 years' work experience or equivalent skills and knowledge expertise in the
set-up and operation of grinding machines, tools and equipment which are
similar or comparable to those used by the Company and which are necessary to
fulfill job requirements. Must read precision measuring instruments such as
calipers and micrometers and engineering diagrams similar or comparable to those used in
grinding operations by the Company. Must be familiar with use of computerized
input system of production results.
