Position Summary

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading the maintenance operations of a high-volume retail distribution center, ensuring optimal performance of all material handling equipment (MHE), facility infrastructure, and automated systems. This role oversees both traditional equipment-such as conveyors, balers, wrappers, and electrical motors-and advanced automation technologies, including AutoStore systems, Bastian automation platforms, and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) such as Manhattan. The Manager will lead a team of technicians and ensure timely troubleshooting, repair, preventive maintenance, and service order execution to maximize uptime and operational efficiency. Manage successful vendor and property management relationships. Requires flexibility to work all shifts.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations Oversight

  • Lead and develop a team of maintenance technicians across multiple shifts.
  • Plan, prioritize, and schedule preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate and execute service orders and recurring maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure all systems meet operational readiness standards to support distribution center KPIs.

Maintenance of Traditional Equipment

  • Oversee maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of:
    • Conveyors and sortation systems
    • Balers and compactors
    • Pallet wrappers and strapping equipment
    • Electrical motors, panels, and basic PLCs
  • Monitor parts inventory and manage vendor relationships for equipment repair and supply.

Automation & Systems Management

  • Manage troubleshooting, repair, and routine service for advanced automation platforms, including:
    • AutoStore robotic systems
    • Bastian Solutions conveyor and integration tools
    • Manhattan WMS and related control systems
  • Work closely with IT and engineering teams to address system alerts, software updates, and root cause resolution.
  • Support the integration and commissioning of new automation technologies.

Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a culture of safety across all maintenance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, and company-specific safety standards.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and safety training for maintenance staff.

Data & Continuous Improvement

  • Utilize CMMS and WMS data to track performance metrics, uptime, and maintenance efficiency.
  • Drive continuous improvement through root cause analysis, preventive actions, and optimization of maintenance routines.
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, and IT to improve reliability and system performance.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years in maintenance leadership within a high-volume distribution or manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient with maintenance and troubleshooting of MHE, automation platforms, and WMS systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Strong computer skills including CMMS, Excel, and system diagnostic tools.

Preferred

  • Experience with AutoStore, Bastian, and Manhattan WMS.
  • OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training.
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis tools (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone).

Move merchandise and equipment up to 50 pounds. Supervisory Responsibilities: The position supervises non-exempt level Maintenance associates in the DC to include interviewing, hiring, scheduling, assignment delegation and follow through and, in conjunction with manager and Human Resources, disciplinary actions. The Maintenance Manager is also responsible for completing the performance evaluations for direct reports. Additionally, this position is responsible for supervising on site vendor and contractor visits.

Work Environment: The duties of this position may be performed in an office environment with exposure to, or in a warehouse environment in which there is constant exposure to, heat, cold, dirt, dust, fumes and/or noise. Work duties are almost exclusively performed indoors in one location, where the risk of minor injury should not be overlooked as a result of warehouse conditions. This position will be required to operate equipment that climbs. Travel to regional and annex locations will be required. May occasionally have to lift up to 50 pounds.
