Position Description:
As a Project Appointment Student, you will, under direct supervision of the PI, perform critical experiments to advance knowledge in the field of cardiovascular physiology and neurosciences. The student will also perform routine tasks to maintain the normal laboratory operations.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the basic laboratory operations. This includes sterilizing material and glassware for use in research lab. Make and supply media buffers and water to research areas as needed.
- Assist in organizing and setup lab supplies and equipment for individual research investigators.
- Assist with inventory and record of supplies.
- Grow and maintain cells and perform studies to test drugs and viral vectors in vitro.
- Performing molecular assays including PCR, western blotting, ELISA and other 'omics'-based assays.
- Processing histological samples, performing immunohistological staining or in situ hybridization and taking pictures under the microscope. Prepare slides to present the data to the team.
- Assist the PI and other lab members to execute experiments involving animals. This includes the maintenance and transporting the animal cages, providing food and water to animals, collecting blood and tissues, administering drugs through different routes, and measuring physiological parameters including but not limited to body wight, body composition, cardiovascular parameters such as blood.
- Assisting the designated surgeons to provide post procedural care including administration of analgesics to the animals.
- Data analysis and elaboration of graphs and tables to present in national meetings.
- Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data as needed.
Knowledge - Skills - Abilities
- Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.
- Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.
- Basic computational skills.
- Basic knowledge of molecular biology (PCR, cloning, cell culture, western blotting, etc)
- Laboratory skills, including pipetting, preparing solutions, buffers, and gels.
- Working with experimental animal models.
Preferred Schedule:
Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00 some weekends
