This is ahybrid position based out of Feeding America's Chicago office location. At Feeding America, we believe in offering a flexible work environment. Employees must be in the office an average of 2 days a week (when not travelling for work) and can work from home on other days. Employees also have access to a 30-day "work anywhere" program during the course of each calendar year that can be combined with PTO and/or holidays.

The Opportunity
The Director, Health Impact Innovation role is responsible for supporting the development and operationalization of innovative strategies, partnerships and initiatives that build pathways to improve neighbors' access to nutritious food that result in improved health outcomes. This role supports the development of transformational relationships with healthcare industry influencers and decision makers in the private/public/non-profit sectors to drive systems change that normalizes insurer-funded business models that pay food banks to provide nutritious food tailored to help manage or prevent chronic disease. Success will require supporting effective and efficient collaboration across Feeding America national organization (FANO) departments and partnering with network members to create national frameworks and state standards that accommodate local operational needs and neighbor preference. Additional core responsibilities include but are not limited to supporting the identification of technology breakthroughs that will accelerate and scale this work, maximization of the network's credibility and share of voice in the Food Is Medicine space, and managing/coaching a highly effective team.
Compensation

Here at Feeding America national organization, equality is central to our mission and is an integral part of our compensation policies and structures. As such, we maintain transparent salary ranges and clearly defined practices for how our team, including new hire salary offers, moves through these ranges. You can expect us to offer the best salary up front based on these clearly defined pay practices with little room for negotiation. We make exceptions for highly experienced (multiple years of at-level experience) new hires in accordance with our pay practices. Once hired, employees have the opportunity to progress through salary ranges via regular merit increases and step promotions.

Salary Range: $109,000 - $114,000 Based on Experience.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise in the execution of the assigned team's work, ensuring that key deliverables, project execution plans, long-range resource need and business case, project budget, timelines, and action steps are clearly articulated, monitored, and met.
  • Oversee the execution of grants, and other major projects providing project management structure and direction to project team members as well as external consultants. Ensure that the process and structure are in place to meet grant deliverable and reporting commitments.
  • Partner in the development and implementation of Feeding America's enterprise-level Health Innovation efforts and Holistic Supports strategies, as well as any other related strategies, providing guidance and consultation to key FANO and network food bank stakeholders to support implementation of these strategies.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and act as a decision maker in the development of proposals and project plans for fundraising opportunities. Actively collaborate with Development team members in donor cultivation and stewardship, funding proposal development and impact/progress reporting.
  • Contribute to the annual planning process ensuring creation of objectives, measures, activities, and budget, and assist with the integration within individual team members' scopes of work.
  • Lead collaborative efforts across departments, to support the evidence building, translation, and dissemination of models, programs, and partnerships that seek to improve key outcomes, build capacity, and inform continuous learning across the network.
  • Identify and elevate national partnerships and models that contribute to team-related (Health Equity, Economic Mobility, Charitable Food Access) strategic goals and engage partners to innovatively address the intersection of food insecurity, nutrition, health and equity.
  • In partnership with the Learning Team, develop and facilitate trainings and technical assistance to the network and other stakeholders via a range of modalities, including documenting and disseminating key learnings and resources with internal and external audiences, and with a focus on ensuring sustainable implementation and impact.
  • Represent Feeding America by serving as a subject matter expert on national advisory councils, task forces, and committees, as well as through speaking engagements at conferences, coalitions, meetings, webinars and similar events, as appropriate.
  • Build and nurture a high performing Health Innovation Team by developing people and furthering their relevant expertise. Identify essential leadership and functional competencies for key roles and coach and develop talent in this space for Feeding America. Create an environment in which individuals from diverse backgrounds can bring their full selves to work and one in which everyone's needs, goals, and development are a priority.
  • Guide and coach teams to properly define the challenge or opportunity they are using the innovation process to solve for. Push teams to use their most expansive and non-conventional thinking to generate a broad set of ideas and possibilities.
  • In partnership with network members and department leadership, support the identification of areas of greatest opportunity to pursue and apply disruptive innovation to advance our work in this space.
  • In collaboration with department leadership, Government Relations, Network, and Advocacy and Community Partnerships departments, support the development and implementation of processes for monitoring changes in the external environment as well as key trends in the non-profit sector. Support leveraging these insights to identify and implement innovative opportunities that have the potential to improve our effectiveness in securing payer/provider contracts, increasing awareness that food insecurity is a public health crisis, and strengthening the capacity and efficiency of the national office and network to improve the health of neighbors through nutritious foods and improve their access to social determinants of health.
  • Support department leadership to cultivate partnerships in Supply Chain, Information Technology and other functional leaders to implement a vision and identify strategic opportunities for healthy food sourcing and leveraging technology to accelerate our mission.
  • Support department leadership to cultivate relationships and partnerships with public/private/non-profit leaders and influencers that will create pathways for business models that pay members for delivering medically tailored foods and other nutrition supports
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of innovation happening throughout our network for the dual purpose of sharing promising practices and scaling what works.
  • Support the development and fulfillment of performance measures and create and oversee the management of a stage-gate process to evaluate, qualify, manage and develop new ideas, including rapid prototyping and testing of new solutions, where needed.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience in non-profit or private sector leadership roles at increasing levels of responsibility. Specific experience in the Food as Medicine programming or health policy space preferred.
  • A strong background in program innovation and/or product or solution development including the ability to shape expansive thinking that is also practical and executable, resulting in successful design, testing and launch of products, services or solutions.
  • Experience leveraging technology to advance the implementation of key strategies, with a working knowledge of and experience with social media and digital marketing tools and trends, preferred.
  • Inherent curiosity and a learning mindset. Someone who thrives in thinking through gray areas of undefined opportunities with an ability to drive innovation, and inspire people outside of their comfort zones in order to shape thinking, while maintaining credibility.
  • Ability to apply "systems thinking" with experience developing operational or strategic frameworks and roadmaps that outline current state, future state and strategies or transformational initiatives needed to achieve the future state. Experience translating this thinking effectively for donors or customers to successfully generate funding or sales, strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record creating productive working relationships within a large, complex organizations, federated network or diverse stakeholder groups.Ability to build respect and trust with diverse internal and external stakeholders and lead through influence and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in utilizing stage-gate models of innovation management to develop and evaluate ideas at key points in the innovation process, preferred.
