The Opportunity
The Director, Development serves as a leader of the Strategic Gifts team and within the overall Development team and manages relationships with a portfolio of 50 or more major and principal gift donors and prospects (capacity for gifts >$150k annually). Develop cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for this portfolio, conduct and support donor outreach and engagement strategies to deepen and expand individual donors' relationships and personally solicit their support. The position plays a key role as a leader on the Strategic Gifts Team, to develop integrated strategies and tactics to deepen relationships with individual donors and prospects for major and principal gifts, and direct donor and food bank network engagement. This position is a fully remote position with frequent (25-30%) travel required.
Compensation

Here at Feeding America national organization, equality is central to our mission and is an integral part of our compensation policies and structures. As such, we maintain transparent salary ranges and clearly defined practices for how our team, including new hire salary offers, moves through these ranges. You can expect us to offer the best salary up front based on these clearly defined pay practices with little room for negotiation. We make exceptions for highly experienced (multiple years of at-level experience) new hires in accordance with our pay practices. Once hired, employees have the opportunity to progress through salary ranges via regular merit increases and step promotions.

Salary Range: $114,000 - $119,000 Based on Experience.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage relationships and develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for a portfolio of 50 or more principal gift donors and prospects capable of considering a gift of $150,000 or more annually to Feeding America, including managing a special portfolio of major and principal gift, collaborative donors and prospects with food bank network members.
  • Collaborate with Director, Development, and VP of Development to develop donor strategy and personally solicit gifts from donors in portfolio while performing all relationship-based and operational functions required to close major and principal gifts, incorporating Feeding America's commitment to centering neighbors into approach to donor relationships and donor communications.
  • Develop personal engagement plans and mission-based partnership opportunities for consideration by individual philanthropists and family foundations, in partnership with the Strategic Gifts team, Feeding America Network member food banks, Feeding America Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and ET members and interdependent Feeding America departments. Integrate and present these strategies to donors to deepen relationships, build connections to Feeding America, generate revenue and grow donor relationships over time.
  • Work with Strategic Gifts team members and appropriate Feeding America SMEs to create and deliver donor strategy documents, briefing memos, stewardship and cultivation reports, gift request proposals and other donor materials required in the donor relationship management cycle for principal gifts donors and prospects.
  • Manage a team of fundraising relationship managers providing clear direction, coaching and support and developing talent for the Strategic Gifts team and the broader Development team.
  • Evaluate various gift opportunities and planned giving vehicles and recommend the most suitable for a donor, fitting with Feeding America's giving policies and programs.
  • Work with the Strategic Gifts Team and network members on the implementation of comprehensive individual stewardship and recognition plans for major and principal donors.
  • Develop and implement plans and strategies to work with Feeding America network member food banks in collaborative fundraising efforts (webinars, events, etc.) with individual major and principal gift donors and prospects.
  • Collaborate with Corporate and Foundation Partnerships team on strategies for high-net-worth donor intersections, including C-suite executives and family foundations.
  • Manage initiatives and special projects that drive ongoing donor and network engagement in achievement of departmental goals.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of fundraising or account management experience, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Strong knowledge of fundraising best practices and implementation of major, annual and planned giving programs
  • Experience in developing donor strategies, briefing and request materials, solicitation approaches and donor stewardship for major, principal and planned giving donors and prospects
  • Experience managing people
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff, volunteers, donors, and prospective donors
  • Understanding of the complexities of fundraising for a large, federated nonprofit
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of fundraising software and strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
