Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary:

Training Manager 3 will function as the Nuclear Qualified Technical Training Manager for N3B and will manage and provide leadership to the technical training group. This position is responsible for the design and delivery of programs to train all levels of personnel for the entire workforce (approximately 450 employees). This also includes evaluating and providing oversight of contractors and vendors in developing and administering training programs; and will be responsible for development of e-learning programs. The Training Manager develops in-house programs and practices to identify developmental needs, including preparing personnel for more responsible positions and increasing effectiveness in present. The Training Manager is viewed as an expert in the field and as highly competent within the broad training discipline, both internally and externally. This manager will have direct oversite of the qualification standard development process, requalification program, and any ad hoc programs as assigned.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. Specifically, see Table 1 - Hazard Category 2 and 3 Nonreactor Nuclear Facility Personnel Education and Experience Requirements, Table 1 Notes: (1).

This position reports to the Training Director in the Engineering & Nuclear Safety Program.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Experience performing critical strategic tasks and to interpreting broad strategic requirements and developing and executing plans to satisfy them
  • Leading the development of tests and visual aids, conducting training classes, and developing criteria for evaluating effectiveness of training activities
  • Keeping abreast of training and development research: learning theory, motivation theory, and new materials, methods, and techniques
  • Experience translating requirements into executable policies and procedures

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Expert knowledge and ability to develop and apply highly principles, concepts and techniques of training management in specified areas of engineering, science or related disciplines
  • Experience managing and overseeing operational activities for programs and projects in the organization including evaluating performance, programs, and processes
  • Proven leadership and organizational abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, work/interact effectively and amicably with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and with diverse personal attributes
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to present ideas effectively in formal and informal situations and convey thoughts clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience training and mentoring staff to higher levels of performance
  • Expert knowledge in the application of DOE Order 426.2
  • Expert knowledge of the DOE Nuclear position qualification and requalification processes.
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree combined with 7 years' relative experience. Experience should include a minimum of 3 years of supervisory responsibility. Must have have 4 years of nuclear experience per DOE O 426.2.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
