Position Announcement

The Department of English at Utah Tech University (UT) in St. George, Utah invites applications for a full-time, Instructor of the Practice (professional track) position in English beginning fall semester 2026. At UT, Instructors of the Practice are considered Master Teachers. Instructors of the Practice are hired as expert instructors with no scholarship expectations and nominal service expectations. Professional track faculty are not on the tenure track, but these positions are continuing positions with rank advancement opportunities. Instructors of the Practice teach a 30-credit load, which typically is a 5-5 load. Any summer teaching or overload teaching during the fall or spring semesters is additional work for additional compensation. Responsibilities

  • Teach 30 credits of lower-division lecture courses each academic year, primarily in Composition. Opportunities for curriculum development are also available.
  • Hold office hours, submit grades per University deadlines, and conduct required course evaluations.
  • Attend department, division, and college faculty meetings. Work with other faculty in program management.
  • Adhere to university policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in English or closely related discipline from an accredited college of university required; Ph.D. preferred. ABD may be considered if degree is awarded prior to August 2026.
  • Background in composition or related field preferred.
  • Evidence of potential for successful teaching at the college level.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work with and assist part-time laboratory instructors.
  • An eagerness to engage with colleagues, staff and administrators to develop ways to improve the educational experience for our students.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:Full-time (9-month) professional-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2026, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2026. Annual salary of $49,000 with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
