Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all
UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the
UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance,
EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support,
HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services.
The
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Department exists to maintain, optimize, and improve indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and occupant thermal comfort in support of the University's mission. Additionally, the department ensures proper function of certain refrigerated food service equipment, critical scientific refrigeration, electrical controls, and specialized laboratory, medical, and dental vacuum and compressed air system. The
HVAC group serves all
UNC-CH buildings excluding most of the hospital and student housing. |
Position Summary |
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $7,500 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $3,750 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $3,750 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
The Assistant Director-
HVAC Operations is responsible for managing Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (
HVAC), which includes maintaining, optimizing, and improving indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and occupant thermal comfort in support of the University's teaching, research, and public service mission. Ensure the proper functioning of certain refrigerated food service equipment, critical scientific refrigeration, and specialized laboratory environmental controls. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical engineering with direct experience in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Experience in the installation, operation and maintenance of such systems, and a working knowledge of codes, laws, and ordinances pertaining to these systems. Ability to review mechanical system designs and interpret related plans and specifications. Effective communication skills, both oral and written. Supervisory experience.
Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.
A valid NC Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Preference for Registered Professional Engineer in State of North Carolina. Experience in troubleshooting and repair of large Direct Expansion (DX) and refrigeration equipment. Experience in variable refrigerant flow systems, environmental chambers, DX zone systems and controllers, dehumidification systems, boilers, refrigerators, ice machines, and large capacity air dryers. Knowledge in electrical, plumbing, and equipment installation. Licensure as a refrigeration contractor, heating contractor, certification in ultra-low temperature refrigeration equipment, and/or a diploma in industrial or
HVAC technical trades. |
Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
Ability to climb ladders, crawl under buildings, enter manholes, and enter and work in confined spaces. |

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.
A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
