About the Role
We are seeking a new Editor to take on responsibility for our academic books program in Film and Television Studies alongside part of our Theatre programme. You will acquire and publish content across all our formats (monographs, Palgrave Pivots, textbooks, reference works, and a small number of general interest titles), in a role which includes maintaining the existing portfolio and developing new areas for growth with a signings target of 70-80 titles per year. You will be responsible for identifying authors, negotiating contract terms, and managing the development and submission of book projects, overseeing the lifecycle of each book from proposal to publication. You will work with the Editorial Director and other senior team members to develop your list as part of the wider team, imprint, and company strategy.

This role will be located in either our New York City office or London office, both offering a hybrid working model.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages and grows a publishing program and delivers competitive and profitable products in line with the company's publishing strategy.

  • Performs key publishing acquisition activities, including:

    • Soliciting, reading and evaluating proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, market and suitability for the list

    • Researching market trends to identify new authors, new titles and new products

    • Managing the backlist associated with the assigned areas, maintaining profitable relationships with existing authors, book series editors and editorial board members

    • Supporting authors and editors in developing their book projects, including OA works and partnerships

    • Negotiates publishing contract terms

    • Remaining a point of contact for authors/editors throughout publication process

  • Ensures editorial policies and processes are consistently applied across activities and goals set by editorial management are met

  • Develops and maintains a large network of authors/editors through various engagement activities within the research community

  • Continually promotes and builds the brand through virtual interactions as well as travelling widely to academic conferences and campus visits

  • Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with editorial service, marketing, production and other relevant departments concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent (preferably in a relevant field of study)

  • Experience (or demonstrable interest) in academic publishing

  • Excellent networking, negotiation and acquisition skills

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Willing and able to travel

  • Able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative

  • Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries

  • Excellent team-working and relationship building skills

  • Able to work independently within a (virtual) team environment

  • Target driven and motivated to meet core objectives and KPIs

  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit, commercially minded and embraces change.

Desirable

  • Acquisitions or commissioning experience in academic publishing

  • Prior knowledge and experience of working within subject area (or a related field)

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $66,000 - $80,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
