Position Title |
Undergraduate GIS |
Job Summary |
The Evergreen State College is seeking adjunct faculty colleagues to contribute to their
undergraduate
GIS Certificate program by teaching courses focused on Geographic
Information Systems. The adjunct faculty member(s) would teach one (or both) of the following 4 credit courses:
GIS: Analysis with ArcGIS Pro-create geographic databases, conduct spatial analysis, and produce layered maps and charts. (Winter Quarter) GIS: Remote Sensing--learn methods to interpret remote sensing imagery for monitoring the earth's environment and human infrastructure, and for detecting change. (Spring Quarter)
New faculty members will be provided with a starting syllabus and modules of online content. Faculty in this curriculum will be expected to adapt and continuously improve the course content to maintain concurrency of the supplied materials and relevance with software version changes.
Evergreen uses and teaches the Esri platform of ArcGIS and its extensions, including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, Field Maps, Insights for ArcGIS, Business Analyst, Community Analyst, and other Esri applications.
GIS courses are taught in the campus scientific lab which accommodates 25 dual monitor workstations.
Evergreen students seek to apply their
GIS knowledge in a variety of professions including natural resource management, conservation, public policy, business enterprises, demographics, non- profit organizations, and research disciplines.
To be successful,
GIS adjunct faculty should be able to teach undergraduate students in several of the following areas (based on specific course priorities):
- Use of ArcGIS Pro to manage geospatial data formats and interactions with the (Esri) geodatabase, including import, export, geodatabase design of feature datasets and classes, raster mosaic and lidar datasets, and others commonly used in the practice of GIS
- Creation of layers and maps, using diverse data types, joins and relates, Arcade (and/or Python) functions, map marginalia (legends, layouts), grids and graticules, multiscale basemaps, layer properties, with attention to coordinate systems, symbolization and labeling best-practices, and metadata standards.
- Introductory methods for analysis of spatial phenomena, using the toolboxes in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Insights for ArcGIS, following scientific principles and best-practice workflows.
- Design and deployment of mobile GIS methods, using Survey123 and Field Maps software (by Esri), and the use of emerging (Esri) methods for smart devices for field data collection and navigation.
- Implementation of raster and elevation data types, satellite and aerial imagery, multispectral imagery, and LiDAR for spatial-temporal data and animations. Analysis of satellite and aerial imagery sources for photogrammetric detection, characterization, modeling and measurement of landscape features, objects, and patterns.
- Sharing maps and apps through StoryMaps, Web Apps, dashboards, and other Esri templates for web-dissemination.
Faculty are expected to engage with students in their individual student mapping projects and advise students in the creation of
GIS portfolio material showing student accomplishment of learning goals. Faculty members are often asked to help students develop projects in their own research and community interests.
Candidates should be able to provide and demonstrate examples of their own work
in
GIS, using interactive apps (such as StoryMaps or Dashboards or similar). Though not required, a digital portfolio would provide useful indication of the candidate's level of knowledge and skills in the practice of
GIS.
This is a
one - or two-quarter adjunct faculty position with primary teaching responsibilities in the evenings. Successful candidates may be eligible for additional teaching opportunities as we continue to build our
GIS program. |
Job Expectations |
Curriculum in the school of Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) is based on undergraduate certificates and bachelor's degree completion curriculum comprised of 4-credit and 8-credit offerings, and capstone work that may include internships or individual study. Courses and programs are offered online, in-person, or in hybrid formats. All curriculum includes synchronous meetings for at least half of the class instruction time. Synchronous sessions occur in the evenings or on weekends (Pacific Time). Faculty development opportunities are provided to help faculty increase skills in online teaching and curriculum design.
Evergreen uses narrative evaluations in lieu of grades, and faculty are generally responsible for evaluating 25 students/quarter in each class. Faculty support students with informal advising as they reflect on their learning processes and develop their own areas of academic concentration.
Our pedagogy centers on collaborative learning communities. We are interested in helping students develop interdisciplinary approaches to critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration across the curriculum. Because over 80% of our students come from underserved and marginalized groups, we are particularly invested in approaches to teaching that emphasize diversity and equity, that provide opportunities for challenge and growth, and that foster a learning environment where all are welcome, and all can learn from each other.
This is an adjunct faculty position and not eligible for continuing appointment. All requirements for the position must be completed at the time of hire. Salary for all positions is based on experience and degrees (see
Salary Grid for more information). We do not offer relocation expenses for our adjunct faculty positions.
