The Keck School of Medicine, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, is seeking a full-time Grossing Technician to join its team.

As an active member of the surgical pathology team, the Grossing Technician will function as an active member of the anatomic pathology team and assist the Pathologists' Assistants and Pathologists as necessary, performing high complexity testing, and is responsible for performing duties associated with the gross examination and prosection of tissue for histological examination for both surgical and autopsy pathology.

The incumbent will:

  • Receive, accession, and triage patient specimens, blocks, and slides.
  • Dissects and prepares non-complex surgical specimens and surgical biopsy specimens
  • Performs specialized procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification
  • Monitor incoming phone inquiries and requests.
  • Handle and dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Maintain and organize laboratory supplies. Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as needed.

Shift: Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM

Hourly range:

The hourly rate range for this position is $33.02 - $41.69. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.


Minimum Education: Associate's degree. Specialized/technical training
Minimum Experience: 1 year
Minimum Field of Expertise: An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR Education/training equivalent to the preceding that includes at feast 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Fire and Safety Certification. If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date.
Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree
Preferred Experience: 2 years
Preferred Field of Expertise: Major in biological science. HT/HTL ASCP Certification
