Configuration Management Lead Location: Bethesda, MD (Onsite with some Hybrid flexibility) Job Overview: Configuration Management (CM) Lead will oversee the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of NICHD's configuration management processes across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud environments. This role is critical to ensuring NICHD's IT systems remain consistent, reliable, secure, and audit-ready. The CM Lead is responsible for guiding technical teams, enforcing CM policies, and ensuring the timely delivery of secure and stable infrastructure in support of NIH's mission. Key Responsibilities Configuration Management Oversight
- Develop, implement, and enforce Configuration Management policies and processes across all infrastructure and applications.
- Oversee the daily management of configuration items (CIs) including servers, endpoints, network devices, and cloud resources.
- Lead configuration audits and reviews to validate accuracy, consistency, and compliance with NIH, FISMA, and federal IT standards.
- Review and approve migration, upgrade, and deployment plans, ensuring risk is mitigated and rollback strategies are in place.
- Maintain and update CM databases and repositories to ensure traceability, accountability, and compliance.
Technical Leadership
- Provide subject matter expertise in network design, routing protocols, traffic engineering, and device configuration.
- Support the design, deployment, and lifecycle management of Spine/Leaf network topologies and other critical architectures.
- Oversee endpoint management solutions across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments, ensuring full patch and security compliance.
- Lead the integration of CM tools with SCCM, BigFix, JAMF-Pro, and VMware for centralized endpoint and system management.
- Collaborate with security teams to ensure compliance with patching requirements, vulnerability mitigation, and baseline hardening.
Compliance and Documentation
- Ensure all CM activities support Authority to Operate (ATO) requirements under FISMA and NIST frameworks.
- Document SOPs, workflows, baselines, and architecture artifacts; ensure they are easily accessible for audits and reviews.
- Generate reports for leadership and stakeholders on CM effectiveness, compliance posture, and system readiness.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide CM guidance to IT staff, ensuring CM best practices are consistently followed.
- Collaborate with program management, cybersecurity, network operations, and system administration leads to align CM practices with mission objectives.
- Present status updates, risks, and recommendations to Client OIT, COR, and CO stakeholders.
Requirements
- 8+ years experience building and operating mission-critical networks.
- 8+ years experience in network design, routing protocols, topology design, device configuration, and traffic engineering.
- 8+ years hands-on experience with Dell network hardware/software.
- 3+ years implementing Spine/Leaf topologies in enterprise environments.
- Proven ability to lead technical projects from design through completion, meeting scope, budget, and schedule.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
(7 years of directly applicable experience may substitute for degree requirements.) - Familiarity with Dell Supermassive and Cisco firewalls.
- Dell Certified Professional - Data Center Networking (preferred).
- SCCM or equivalent certification (preferred).
- 8+ years installing, administering, and troubleshooting endpoint management tools (BigFix, SCCM, JAMF-Pro).
- 8+ years implementing integration solutions for endpoint management across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments.
- 8+ years designing, deploying, and supporting Windows Server, Apple workstations, Active Directory, GPO, VMware, and PowerShell.
- Strong background in software distribution, patch management, and upgrades.
- Proven experience working directly with security teams to ensure systems meet patching and compliance requirements.
- Strong skills in strategic thinking, multi-tasking, time management, and planning/executing to schedule.
- Excellent documentation, organizational, and communication skills (oral and written).
Compensation and Benefits The projected compensation range for this position is $100,000 to $200,000 per year benchmarked in the Washington DC Metro area. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
