Job Description

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a cell biologist research scientist to join our "Cell Hub" team within the High Throughput Human Biology (HTHB) group in Boston Research. The Cell Hub focuses on the maintenance, tracking, QC, and production of cell biomass for Vertex's most important assays, while also exploring and developing new techniques for large scale production of complex cell models. Experience with aseptic technique when culturing mammalian cells is required and experience with iPSC expansion and differentiation is desired. Experience with automation, bioreactors, or cell microcarriers is a plus. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated, have outstanding technical, record-keeping, and communication skills, high attention to detail, and be capable of working independently on the execution of experiments.Above all, we are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual with a passion for in vitro cell culture who enjoys working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team environment to support multiple discovery project teams.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carefully follow SOPs to produce cellular biomass for critical assays
  • Conduct experimental protocol optimization and troubleshooting
  • Coordinate acquisition, tracking, storage, and QC of key cell culture reagents
  • Work with various cell models including immortalized cell lines, iPSC derived cell models, and primary tissue derived cultures
  • Enable automation of workflows by collaborating with automation engineers
  • Identify and help implement technological improvements to cell culture processes
  • Maintain an up to date and accurate electronic lab notebook, including tracking of materials, generating QC reports, and recording and publishing other data as needed by collaborating project teams
  • Present studies effectively at internal department or project team research meetings
  • Contributes to nonclinical Study Report and publication preparation
  • Be an active member of the HTHB team and represent the Cell Hub on interdisciplinary project teams

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to execute complex experiments and deliver expected results
  • A broad working knowledge of fundamental biology principles
  • Demonstrates astute understanding of own discipline and the relevant literature
  • Maintains a high level of knowledge related to current developments in the scientic Project eld
  • Displays experimental productivity, and effective dissemination of ideas
  • Demonstrates effective, self-sufcient communication skills, especially in peer-directed presentations
  • Demonstrates awareness of other Project-related disciplines and an understanding of general concepts and some experimental detail within those areas

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 0-3 years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
  • Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 3+ years of relevant employment experience, or
  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 6+ years of relevant employment experience

Pay Range:

$103,200 - $154,800

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
