Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Patient Access Nurse's primary function is to assist in the screening and approval of patient applicants for Newport Healthcare treatment facilities. This includes review of documentation, consultation with clinical and medical team members, risk assessment, case summary, and clear documentation related to operational approval and medical clearance for admission readiness. Additionally, this individual will support the Patient Access team in ongoing quality improvement efforts, leveraging their medical experience and expertise to help strengthen the Patient Access department and mission.

Key Performance Responsibilities:

  • Receive and reviewmedical clearance requests from Patient Access Clinicians.
  • Conduct record reviews of clinical and medical screening questionnaires, clinical or hospital treatment records, referent-provided information, and any other collateral provided regarding the application for treatment.
  • Consult with senior providers(e.g., physician or advanced practice provider) for cases requiring additional insight or decisions outside scope.
  • Speak with external stakeholders, referents, providers, or family members to gather clarifying information related to medical conditions and patient needs.
  • Exercise discretion to make independent clearance decisions that fall within nursing scope of practice.
  • Maintain accurate documentationof all medical clearance decisions and consultations, following department and organizational standards.
  • Collaborate with Patient Access leadership to identify trends, risks, and process improvement opportunities.
  • Support the department's goal of timely, accurate, and clinically appropriate clearance decisionsto facilitate patient admissions.
  • Ensure compliancewith organizational policies, professional standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Participate in training, quality reviews, and team meetingsas required.
  • Track and monitor key metrics, including volume of medical clearance requests, turnaround time for decisions, clearance approval/denial rates, and other trends or data points as requested by management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Starting compensation for this role ranges from $80,000 - $105,000 annually, depending on education and experience.

Education, Experience, License Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field from an accredited school required.
  • Master's degree in nursing or related field from an accredited school preferred.
  • Possess a current and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in a state which Newport Healthcare provides treatment services required (CA, WA, UT, MN, CT, VA).
  • Expertise in patient screening - intake assessment, risk evaluation, medical triage.
  • At least 2 years of experience with behavioral health and/or substance abuse treatment required.
  • Experience with adolescent and/or young adult population (ages 10-30) preferred.
  • Experience working at hospital, partial hospital, or residential level of care settings preferred.
