Overview:

Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Surgical Assistant I or II in Suffolk, Virginia.This is a full-time, rotating shift (36 hour) position with required call.

Must be within 30 minutes of hospital location for call purposes.

Sign on bonus up to $7,500 (new grad) - $15,000- Experienced (1 year) available for qualified candidates.

Hours and Call: on-call weekend rotations every 5th weekend (24 hour, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), rotating weekday overnight call, and one holiday per year. Surgical Services offers flexible scheduling options such as 8, 10, or 12-hour shifts to accommodate work-life balance.

About the department:

Sentara Obici Hospital is a recognized Primary Stroke Center and Magnet hospital, with an average of 5,000 cases per year. The 40-person team supports seven operating rooms, and performs a diverse range of procedures including general, ortho, podiatry, vascular, GYN, spine, and plastics, utilizing advanced systems like DaVinci robotic technology. The team, comprising RNs, surgical assistants, surgical technologists and OR techs, works across Obici and Bell Harbor hospitals, with opportunities to assist in Obstetrics as needed. The Certified Surgical Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team, the Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.

Education

  • TS - Trade School Graduate CAAHEP - Surgical Assistant required

Certification/Licensure

  • Licensed Surgical Assistant - Virginia required

  • Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) - Certifications - National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) OR

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) - Certifications - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification - American Heart Association (AHA)required

Experience

  • 1 year of Operating room experience preferred

  • Demonstrates in depth clinical and technical skills in surgical fields

  • Participate in departmental improvement efforts preferred

  • Uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes required
