Senior Licensed Vocational Nurse - OBGYN

The Senior Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides high-quality patient care within UCSF's Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN) practice. This role supports clinic flow, performs clinical procedures, and collaborates closely with providers and staff to create a patient-centered environment. The LVN ensures safety, delivers excellent customer service, and upholds UCSF's PRIDE values in every patient interaction. The LVN plays a key role in patient assessments, education, coordination of care, and support of both gynecologic and urogynecologic services. This position requires strong communication skills, clinical competency, and the ability to work in a fast-paced outpatient environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment & Care
- Identify patient needs through observation and basic assessment.
- Report changes in patient condition to providers and clinical staff.
- Participate in the intake process and support patient privacy and comfort.
- Assist with patient preparation for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Support population health initiatives through in-reach and outreach activities.
Clinical Procedures
- Assist providers with gynecologic and urogynecologic office procedures, including:
- Manual Uterine Aspiration
- Hysteroscopy
- Cystoscopy
- Urodynamics testing
- Perform point-of-care testing, collect specimens, and maintain QA/QC standards.
- Administer medications and injections, and maintain competency in pharmacology.
- Ensure exam room readiness, including cleaning, supply management, and equipment safety.
Coordination & Communication
- Support smooth patient flow throughout the clinic.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including nursing observations, interventions, and patient education.
- Provide clear, concise communication via phone and electronic systems.
- Participate in daily team huddles to ensure efficient, patient-centered care.
- Demonstrate professionalism and uphold UCSF communication standards (AIDET).
Patient Education & Advocacy
- Identify and support patient education needs.
- Provide patients with information to support informed decision-making.
- Use educational resources and interpreter services as appropriate.
- Assist providers in educating patients and reinforcing health teaching.
Performance Improvement & Professional Development
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Follow safety and infection control protocols.
- Maintain required certifications, competencies, and ongoing education.
Administrative Support
- Greet and room patients; support check-in and check-out processes as needed.
- Coordinate appointments, procedures, and referrals using APeX.
- Triage phone calls and manage electronic messages.
- Support front desk operations when needed.
Clinic Support Duties
- Prepare instruments and supplies for daily provider schedules.
- Assist with specimen processing and documentation.
- Maintain accurate logs (refrigerator temperatures, supplies, medications, etc.).
- Support inventory, supply ordering, and equipment readiness.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
- Current California LVN license
- 2-3 years of experience in an ambulatory or outpatient clinical setting
- Experience in a fast-paced OBGYN environment
- Experience administering injections and drawing labs
- CPR certification
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to provide OB and GYN care across diverse populations
Preferred Qualifications
- Obstetrics & Gynecology experience
- Ambulatory/outpatient experience
- Knowledge of LEAN methodology
License/Certification
- Active California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license
- AHA CPR certification
