Job Summary:
Assistant Production Supervisor is responsible for providing support to the leadership team and supervision of the plants Batching Department. Performs duties that will assist the team in the production of aseptically packaged products in a safe, clean work environment. As well as all functions relating to the batching process and equipment used to manufacture food products. Also, provide feedback to R&D regarding plant trials and product formulations as well as plant capabilities and concerns in batching.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Leadership and ownership of the department, job responsibilities and job function.
- Establishes Department KPI's with management support and report out weekly.
- Provide on-site plant support during customer and R&D trials.
- Serve as a source of technical knowledge and expertise for the batching department.
- Assists in the development of standard operating procedures, trains employees and project development.
- Works closely with R&D regarding batching capabilities at the plant level and provides feedback on batch formulas prior to commercialization of product.
- Monitors and fixes faults as well as clearing any material jams in equipment.
- Conducts required quality checks to assure standards are met.
- Maintain clean and organized area around equipment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve operating difficulties involving area equipment.
- Perform routine and corrective maintenance on all machines.
- Support mechanics in appropriate maintenance activities.
- Accurately prepares and maintains all area paperwork.
- Proficient and comfortable using a computer.
- Performs a variety of quality and food safety checks to ensure standards and specifications are met.
- Prepare, distribute and maintain records and paperwork related to assigned tasks.
- Works with QA to make sure batch instructions are current and available for all products.
- Audit quality, safety and other processes.
- Works with management to ensure effective organizational design and roles are correctly organized, defined, documented and communicated to all employees.
- Manages the hours/PTO/schedule of the batching employees.
- Attend conference & plant calls relating to product formulation and product trials.
- Communicate to all other facility personnel regarding any delays or problems that would hinder production.
- Must follow all employee safety, food safety and quality procedures and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
- Responsible for making sure proper shift handoff with incoming/outgoing batching operators.
- Must wear all required PPE, such as protective gloves, aprons, face shields and safety glasses.
- Able to flex schedule to provide leadership support in the Batching Department for all shifts
- All other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversees the entire Batching Department providing support to the Production Supervisors and provides leadership guidance to the Production Support Technicians. May step in as Production Support Technician, if needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualification:
- Associates degree or higher.
- Experience in food manufacturing environment.
- Prior supervisory experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Basic math skills including weight calculations, averages and percentages.
- Knowledge of product formulations and product batching preferred.
- Ability to work with minimal amount of supervision.
- Able to evaluate a situation and make a good decision.
- A desire to succeed and good work ethic.
- Excellent oral and written skills.
- High-energy, flexible, self-starter, hands on, comfortable with little or no administrative support.
- Attention to detail.
- Team player with a sense of urgency and a self-accountability mentality.

Additional Considerations:
- Travel: Travel may occur per management due to training needs and job-related functions.
- Location: SunOpta Plant at MN Street in Alexandria, MN.
- Shift: Typically, Monday through Friday, 4 pm to 1 am. Requires flexibility to cover other shifts and weekends, as needed.
- Work Environment:100% of work is performed in a manufacturing facility which is not climate controlled and may contain allergens.
- Physical Demands: Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, climb stairs and stand for long periods of time.
- Relocation or international remote working arrangements (outside of the US) will not be considered.
