Overview The General Utility Worker (GUW) LI-2 is an entry-level role within Construction Services Street & Gas Operations. This position involves hands-on field work with a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork. The primary responsibility is to develop skills and qualify for advancement through our training programs in Mechanical, Electrical, Machinist, and/or Welding disciplines.
Responsibilities Core Responsibilities
- The primary responsibility of the General Utility Worker (GUW) in Gas Operations is to assist in the maintenance and repair of the gas distribution system, perform mandated inspection programs, and respond to emergency calls. Selected candidates must possess technical and mechanical ability to learn to perform natural gas pipeline maintenance in the field.
- This position is covered under US Department of Transportation regulations and therefore successful candidates will be required to undergo random drug tests, which will include marijuana. You may also be randomly tested for drugs at any time during your employment with Con Edison, including for marijuana. Marijuana use is strictly prohibited.
- The selected candidates will be required to access/enter customer premises, and interact with customers on a regular basis, and will be expected to provide outstanding customer service and present a positive image of the company to our customers and the general public.
- Successful candidates must have the ability to follow safe work practices and procedures; comply with environmental policies and procedures. This is a Safety-Sensitive position.
- Successful candidates must have a valid driver's license and a demonstrated ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. They must also pass a written and practical road test to be administered by Con Edison.
- This position requires the ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions. Selected candidates will be required to work overtime, various rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, based upon operating needs.
- If you accept a job offer in connection with this posting, you will be assigned to one of the company's operating regions within Construction Services (Bronx/Westchester, Brooklyn/Queens, or Manhattan) based on operational needs.
- The role may include operating Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) weighing between 10,000 and 26,000 pounds.
- Assist with the construction, maintenance, and repair of equipment on electrical, steam, and gas systems.
- Safely operate and maintain tools and equipment, including jackhammers (up to 90 lbs.), tampers, digging machinery, and other hand and power tools. Perform standard maintenance tasks and accurately locate leaks in gas mains and services.
- Learn to read and interpret blueprints and sketches; apply this knowledge to maintenance and construction tasks using hand and power tools.
- Perform physically demanding activities such as excavating, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
- Complete First Aid and CPR certification prior to orientation.

- Comfortable performing physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments. Required
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Required
- Willingness to obtain certifications (First Aid, CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens) and licenses when needed. Required
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights. Required
- Strong focus on safety and following company guidelines. Required
- Previous construction experience is a plus. Preferred
- Mechanical and/or electrical aptitude is preferred. Preferred

Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Perform work in underground vaults through manholes
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
- Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
- Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
- Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
- Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
