Overview

The Steam Distribution Engineering Section within the Steam and Gas Engineering Department seeks a motivated Associate to support metering operations and system reliability. This role involves commissioning and inspecting field-installed equipment, developing and maintaining technical specifications, and performing field and laboratory analyses to evaluate equipment performance and resolve issues. The Associate will also participate in the sequence engineering program to ensure the safe activation of company assets, contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of the steam distribution system.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Inspect and troubleshoot equipment such as revenue meters, flow computers, pressure transmitters, motor-operated valves and associated relay control system, valves, pumps, traps, etc., within the steam system.
  • Perform Sequence Engineering duties off-shift and on weekends, prepare training and documentation related to the commissioning of new equipment.
  • Oversee capital improvement projects to upgrade flow metering systems from old to state-of-the-art systems.
  • Develop new and recommend improvements for written specifications for design, construction, purchasing and the operation of new and existing metering systems and equipment.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to customers architects, consultant engineers, and mechanical contractors on high-pressure steam piping system installations, while selecting and sizing Company metering devices, equipment, and controls for all steam metering setups.
  • Review and approve all customer design and construction drawings for high-pressure steam piping system installations, monitor on-site piping construction through field inspections, and evaluate engineering and shop drawings submitted by professional engineers, registered architects, and mechanical contractors for compliance with Company specifications and applicable codes.
  • Investigate customer violations and complaints reported by internal departments or customers, correspond and meet with customers or their representatives to resolve issues, and initiate necessary corrective actions.
  • Develop and perform bench tests on selected new flow metering equipment. Prepare and submit written proposals for the approval of new flow metering equipment by the Public Service Commission.
  • Investigate, develop and evaluate new calibration equipment and procedures for the purpose of modernizing meter-testing facilities and improving calibration accuracy and reliability. Evaluate, field test, approve and monitor new types of meter accessory and service equipment (i.e. meter regulating valves, valve actuators, pressure transducers, flow recorders, pressure reducing valves, modems, relays, etc.) for steam distribution applications.
  • Monitor steam meter piping/station construction and perform field inspections to ascertain compliance with Company requirements/specifications. Meet with architects, engineers and mechanical contractors to discuss job progress, resolve problems arising from unforeseeable field conditions and provide technical assistance.
  • Provide technical assistance to Commercial Services in resolving high bill complaints, support steam operations through field and laboratory analyses of equipment failures and performance and appear in PSC hearings to provide testimony when required.
  • Establish and monitor pressure districts to determine accurate steam billing correction factors, while overseeing and inspecting prototype equipment deployed through Research and Development projects.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and one year of experience, including co-op or internships, working on engineering related design and modification of industrial systems.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and two years of engineering work experience, including co-op or internships, working on engineering related design and modification of industrial systems.
Relevant Work Experience

  • Experience in electric and steam power plants, preferred.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
