Primary Purpose
The Office of International Programs ( OIP) at Appalachian State University (App State) empowers students, faculty and staff to address local and global challenges through sustainable and socially responsible means by eliminating barriers to meaningful engagement in global learning opportunities. OIP works in collaboration with campus, community, and global partners to expand and deepen global learning opportunities for App State and High Country communities. OIP supports the implementation of App State's global engagement mission, including the co-creation of initiatives that build the skills, knowledge, and perspectives necessary to engage meaningfully and ethically in local and global contexts.

The Director of Global Learning is an international education leader who supports university-wide efforts to develop, implement, and assess high-impact global learning initiatives in alignment with OIP's, Academic Affairs', and the University's global learning mission, vision, and values.
Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree at the time of hire;
  • Five or more years of progressive leadership experience developing and managing global learning programs within a university setting;
  • A demonstrated capacity to design and conduct meaningful assessments of global learning outcomes;
  • A demonstrated understanding of global risk management in the field of international education;
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of university stakeholders;
  • A demonstrated capacity to navigate conflict;
  • A demonstrated capacity to develop positive, collaborative working relationships with colleagues and constituents.

Preferred Qualifications
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Global Learning has responsibilities across three key areas: 1) assessment and internationalization, 2) risk management, and 3) strategic leadership of the Education Abroad unit. Specific responsibilities within each of these areas include:
Assessment and Internationalization

  • Designing and implementing a comprehensive assessment framework for global learning at App State in partnership with the Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs;
  • Analyzing and disseminating assessment data to inform global learning programming at App State;
  • Sharing and disseminating information on current issues in international higher education, the field of education abroad, and international mobility trends within OIP and among the broader University community;
  • Working with the Assistant Vice Provost and campus partners to support OIP's international institutional partnership strategy;
  • Enhancing effective partnerships with academic units and non-academic units on campus;
  • Representing with considerable independence App State and its global learning programs throughout the campus, with professional organizations and associations throughout the world, and with existing and emerging global partners;
  • Acting as an advocate for global learning across App State;
  • Working with the Assistant Vice Provost to increase capacity among faculty and academic units to integrate global learning into their curricula;
  • Organizing the annual OIP Global Symposium and other campus-based global learning initiatives.


Risk Management

  • Serving as a member of the International Crisis Management Response team;
  • Serving as a member of the Global Health & Safety Committee;
  • Working with the Assistant Vice Provost to evaluate, improve, and implement international travel risk management policies and processes;
  • Designing and delivering health, safety, and risk management trainings for campus constituents.

Strategic Leadership of the Education Abroad Unit

  • Managing and supervising the Associate Directors of Education Abroad;
  • Supporting the professional development of the Associate Directors of Education Abroad, with particular focus on supporting the Associate Directors' leadership and management of their respective teams;
  • Overseeing Education Abroad budgets in collaboration with the Assistant Vice Provost and Business Officer;
  • Working collaboratively with the Education Abroad team to reach strategic goals;
  • Serving on a rotation for on-call emergencies and crisis response for faculty-led programs;
  • Working with the Associate Directors of Education Abroad to streamline and implement policies that reduce barriers to education abroad and global learning for faculty, staff and students;
  • Communicating with students, parents, faculty, institutional partners, program providers, and other stakeholders as needed.
