We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary team to reshape how we defend Microsoft. You will establish and build processes and structures to empower research scenarios: from data engineering, construction of training data sets, creation of new telemetry sources, building of knowledge graphs, scalable infrastructure, and creation of agentic AI systems or new security-focused language models. You will design, implement and maintain software systems for autonomous defense, offense and incident response. You would be responsible for working together with applied scientists, engineers, and security researchers to design, implement and maintain systems to solve real-world scenarios and challenges. You would be responsible for working with teams across Microsoft to integrate with established and new services. Responsibilities
  • Acts as enablers to applied scientists and security researchers by creating software systems, infrastructure, services, and data pipelines using cloud technologies.
  • Produce reliable and performant code and conduct design and code reviews to ensure alignment with standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with researchers on the design, development, execution, and implementation of software projects and cutting-edge AI based solutions that serve Microsoft Defenders.
  • Incorporate state-of-the-art research or previously tested solutions occurring at Microsoft and academia and tune it to solve complex security challenges.
  • Research and develop an understanding of tools, technologies, and methods being used in the community that can be utilized to improve product quality, performance, or efficiency.
  • Follow release management policies to ensure data integrity, compliance, and system stability


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to python or C#, OR equivalent experience. *
  • 2+ years of experience building scalable software systems, preferably in python or C#.
  • 2+ years of experience building, scaling, and operating Azure cloud services.
  • 2+ years of experience building customer solutions or open-source projects using ML/generative AI and/or multi-agent frameworks such as AutoGen, LangChain, LangGraph, crewAI, or equivalent.

Qualifications - Other Requirements:*

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C# or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with building and deploying services on Azure including Azure Functions, Azure Containers, Azure DevOps pipelines, Github actions, Github Codespaces, and Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Experience with Microsoft security products, including Sentinel, Defender, Security Copilot, etc.
  • Experience with rapidly implementing and testing research ideas.
  • Track record of code contributions to products and/or open-source projects.
  • Experience with training and fine-tuning of transformer-based models, information retrieval or reinforcement learning
  • Experience with MLOps.
  • Experience in cyber security and safety domains, such as malware detection, fraud prevention, cyber-physical systems, adversary tradecraft, emerging threats or SOC operations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to simplify and explain complex ideas

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
