What to Expect
Tesla Manufacturing Engineers have the important role of designing "The machine that builds the machine". We work with cross-functional teams (Design, Quality, Production, Sustaining, and Supply Chain) throughout the entire lifecycle of a product (from initial design through prototype development and into full production) to develop high quality and efficient manufacturing equipment and processes that will producethe powertrains, power electronics, and batteries inside our vehicle, energy, and robotics products. The role of the Manufacturing Engineer, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is to develop and implement a world-class ESD control program across Tesla's global manufacturing operations. They will join a small team of subject matter experts who develop cost-effective and efficient ESD controls for new manufacturing lines, quantitatively validate these controls, and handover to operations teams. The ideal candidate is data-driven, excels at complex problem solving, has a strong manufacturing and systems-based mindset, and can lead cross-functional teams to identify and eliminate potential quality risks. The candidate should have a proven track record of problem solving, manufacturing engineering, quality system implementation, and/or ESD expertise applied to manufacturing environments.
What You'll Do
- Execute ESD risk assessment by identifying high-risk processes, developing control strategies, and communicating to manufacturing engineering stakeholders
- Complete process characterization and validation during factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT)
- Develop process documentation, such as PFMEA and control plan, and communicate to sustaining team stakeholders
- Develop, implement, and maintain Tesla's ESD control program in collaboration with Tesla's ESD program manager
- Drive global ESD control program compliance by engaging with local facility ESD teams and ESD coordinators
- Draft, review, and publish ESD technical standards, procedures, templates, training, and documentation (e.g., lessons learned, best practices, etc.)
- Identify and qualify ESD control items and materials for use within the program, and maintain the ESD approved material list
- Provide technical consultation relating to electrically induced physical damage (EIPD), electrical over-stress (EOS), and/or ESD
- Identify gaps, improvements, and expansion opportunities for Tesla's ESD control program
- Up to 25% travel to global Tesla and/or supplier facilities
What You'll Bring
- Experience developing and/or implementing ESD control program(s) based on industry standards (including ANSI/ESD S20.20, IEC 61340-5-1, ESD TR53, etc.)
- Experience as a hands-on quality, process, or manufacturing engineer working in a high-volume and pilot manufacturing environment
- Experience generating process quality, technical specifications, and/or training documentation
- Experience applying structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., DMAIC, 5 Whys, Fishbone, and 8D)
- Experience applying electrical theories and concepts (i.e., resistance, voltage, current, and electric charge & fields)
- Experience using electrical and/or ESD-specific measurement equipment (i.e., multimeters, data loggers, resistance meters, electrostatic field meters, charged plate monitors, and electrostatic voltmeters)
- Bachelor's Degree in Science (Physics), Engineering (Electronics, Electrical), related technical field, or equivalent experience
