GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This position is serves as a trainee for the purpose of enhancing and developing scientific competencies and manufacturing understanding. This is a temporary assignment based on the academic calendar of the affiliated school. A student generally participates in a minimum of two work periods but three is encouraged. Co-op students work under close supervisor of a more experienced engineer or manager. Co-ops are assigned to business related projects

Essential Job Functions:



  • Serves as a trainee for the purpose of enhancing and developing competencies
  • Participates in the execution of highly technical and complex projects under the direction of a more senior manager. May or may not work independently.


Other Job Functions:



  • Researches, compiles and evaluates data sources, background information and/or technology related to additive manufacturing and material science
  • Contributes to the development of research documentation for publication and/or prepares technical reports, papers and/or records
  • Operates and maintains laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) equipment
  • Maintains knowledge of discipline through familiarity with current literature
  • Observes appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP),
  • Ensures compliance to all regulatory and safety requirements
  • Performs other duties as may be required by supervisor

Required Experience:

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications



  • BS degree in progress in a relevant field required
  • Experience in mechanical, materials or aerospace engineering. May be limited to course work. Prior work experience, experience with additive manufacturing or experience with 3D printing is a plus but not required.
  • Knowledge in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocol related to the possible exposures to dust, chemicals, etc. that could potentially affect the health of the employee
  • Ability to observe appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

    • Competency in Microsoft Office Suites Products and other relevant software




  • Knowledge of use of protective equipment and safety protocols related to handling hazardous materials



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:



  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment & Conditions

This position maybe in a laboratory environment and could required the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:



  • Safety glasses
  • Respirator (varies based on tasks and barrier requirements)
  • Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)


Physical Demands



  • Ability to perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs while performing the work.
  • Ability to walk for reasonable distances while performing the work.
  • Ability to lift / carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. while performing the work.
  • Ability to pull or push objects weighing up to 50 lbs. while performing the work.
