Position / Job Summary
Supports the day-to-day operations of the General Accounting function by ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, full cycle accounting, and compliance with GAAP and GASB. This role provides leadership to accounting staff; supports month end and year end close activities; assists with external audits; and promotes continuous improvement in accounting processes and ERP utilization.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Provide leadership and direction for day-to-day general accounting operations to support GAAP and GASB compliant financial reporting. Directly supervise assigned accounting staff, including hiring recommendations, training, performance management, year-end evaluations, and daily personnel oversight. Train, review, and assist staff with monthly reconciliations, journal entries, report preparation, and related accounting functions. Manage full cycle accounting, including month end close, year-end close, annual financial reporting, and audit preparation. Assist in the preparation of the Annual Financial Audit Report by developing schedules, drafting footnotes, and compiling supporting documentation.
Recommend and support the implementation of policies, procedures, and process improvements aligned with GAAP and GASB standards. Strengthen ERP utilization and support continuous improvement initiatives across accounting operations. Collaborate effectively with departments campus wide and within the Finance department to support accurate and efficient accounting processes. Support effective utilization and ongoing improvement of the College's ERP system. May work weekends and/or extended hours during the annual financial audit. Perform related duties as assigned. This position requires regular on-site presence to fulfill essential duties that cannot be performed remotely. Duties must be executed in-person to ensure effective collaboration, supervision, and service delivery, in accordance with Texas SB 2615. If physical presence is not essential: This position may be eligible for remote work only under conditions permitted by Texas SB 2615, including temporary illness, disability accommodations, or assignment to approved remote instruction programs. All employees are required to complete a minimum of 19 hours. Employees in people leader positions or positions that include supervisory duties must complete an additional 16 hours of leadership development.
The following essential duties and responsibilities are also required for People Leader positions specifically:
Exercise full discretion and decision-making authority in recruitment, selection, hiring, mentoring, coaching, development & performance evaluation of staff, ensuring alignment with applicable laws, college policies, organizational goals, budgetary constraints, and workforce planning strategies. Manage and drive high performance by administering the performance management process timely, setting clear expectations, conducting performance evaluations, and implementing initiatives that enhance employee engagement, motivation, and retention.
Minimum and Preferred - Education, Experience, and/or Certifications
Minimum Requirements for Position (necessary or mandatory)
Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and professional accounting experience. Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible accounting experience in governmental, public sector, or higher education environments. Demonstrated experience applying GASB standards to financial reporting and accounting operations. Official transcripts required. Must have a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required Qualifications for Role (necessary or mandatory)
Knowledge of GASB standards applicable to public colleges and universities, including fund accounting, financial statement presentation, and required disclosures.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, multi-fund public sector environment. Ability to employ leadership skills to motivate and encourage employees and promote effective teamwork. Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders. Knowledge of internal controls, institutional policies, and applicable state and federal regulations. Commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and ethical standards expected in public higher education.
