Johnson County Mental Health Center is seeking a qualified Registered Nurse to serve in a Float Nurse role. This position provides nursing coverage and clinical support across both residential and outpatient clinic settings. Daily location assignments will vary based on operational needs.

Schedule

    Four 10-hour shifts per week: 10:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
    • Rotating schedule:
      o Week 1: Monday through Thursday
      o Week 2: Wednesday through Saturday

This schedule supports both clinic and residential program coverage.


The Float Nurse (RN) functions in both residential crisis services and outpatient mental health clinic settings. This role works closely with psychiatrists, clinicians, case managers, direct care staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to meet the mental health and medical needs of clients.
The nurse must demonstrate flexibility, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to adapt to varying environments and acuity levels.

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities
Clinical Nursing Services

  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessments incorporating medical, psychiatric, family, and environmental factor
  • Collect and document health histories
  • Measure and record vital signs
  • Complete health assessments and limited physical exams
  • Obtain, process, and manage lab specimens
  • Perform minor procedures and treatments within scope

Medication Management

  • Manage and implement medication administration programs
  • Administer oral and injectable psychotropic medications, including intramuscular injections
  • Verify psychiatric provider orders
  • Monitor medication response, side effects, and potential complications
  • Administer and track required clinical rating scales such as AIMS
  • Coordinate medication changes with psychiatrists and treatment team

Psychiatric & Crisis Support

  • Assess psychiatric symptoms and psychosocial concerns
  • Identify potential medical or medication-related issues
  • Participate in admissions support as needed
  • Coordinate care with clinicians, case managers, and residential staff
  • Assist with crisis stabilization efforts in residential settings

Care Coordination & Education

  • Provide case management, care coordination, and follow-up
  • Educate clients and families on health, wellness, and medication adherence
  • Develop and provide health-related training to staff
  • Provide referrals and supportive resources

Documentation & Quality Assurance

  • Complete and submit timely documentation
  • Review quality and effectiveness of services
  • Monitor and evaluate treatment outcomes and adjust care plans as appropriate


Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school or equivalent and a Vocational, Associate's, or Bachelor's degree in Nursing or other Nursing program that meets the requirements for the Registered Nurse license are required. Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Kansas is required. May require KS/MO driver's license, depending on department or agency.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements:

One year of nursing experience is preferred.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

Excessive standing and/or walking: 40%.

Lifting: varies by assignment.

Exposure to hazardous materials (bodily fluids).

Within sixty (60) days of hire, employees (select DHE and EMS positions) must produce proof of immunization, proof of immunity, proof that immunization is medically contraindicated, submit a written objection to immunization based upon a sincerely held religious belief, or receive vaccination for the following: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR); Tetanus Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis (TDAP); and Varicella (Chickenpox).

All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
