Job Summary: Seasonal Assistant Head Lifeguards are responsible for the daily supervision and operation of an aquatic facility, ensuring a safe, clean, and well-maintained environment for patrons and staff. This position manages lifeguards and provides training according to established standards. The Seasonal Head Lifeguard also recognizes and responds to rescues/emergency situations and provides first aid. Perform administrative duties, support maintenance, and assist with programming, retention, recruitment, and communication.



Essential Responsibilities:



  • Supervise, actively guard, and scan the swimming and surrounding areas to prevent drownings and injuries. Enforce policies and recognize and respond to rescues and emergency situations. Administer first aid and emergency medical care. Maintain good mental and physical fitness.
  • Provide professional and courteous customer service to patrons, addressing questions and concerns in a timely manner. Communicate effectively with staff, supervisors, and the public to ensure clear expectations, promote safety, and support a positive environment.
  • Ensure that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety and training procedures. Train, assess, and correct new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities. Perform disciplinary action as needed.
  • Assist with program implementation, swim lesson coordination, staff recruitment efforts, water safety days, public communications, and other assigned duties. Teach water exercise classes, instruct swim lessons, and assist with lifeguard training programs as assigned.
  • Accountable for general maintenance and cleanliness including the pool, deck, building, bathrooms, cutting and trimming grass, trash pickup, snow blowing and shoveling, and report work orders. Maintain all lifeguard equipment to local health code compliance. Order pool chemicals.
  • Support training in lifeguarding procedures, emergency response, pool operations, swim instruction, and rule enforcement. Assist in EMR and CPR skills. Ensure compliance with safety standards and required certifications.
  • Safely and properly operate chemical controllers, pool filtration systems, pool vacuums, pressure washers, water test kits, hand tools, garden tools, and more. Assist with maintaining proper water chemistry, including conducting filter backwashes and monitoring chemical feeders.
  • Complete and assist with compliance of required documents, including first aid, rescue, emergency, and incident reports. Maintain water chemistry and pool operation records, schedules, payroll, inventory, evaluations, lesson plans, daily logs, and training documentation.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



Minimum Requirements:



  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Possession of a valid United States Driver's License, able to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a lifeguard.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs., and push and pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 5% of the time in this role.
  • Proficient swimmer and comfortable in all types of water conditions.
  • Able to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activates to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety.
  • Willing and able to obtain Emergency Medical Responder Certification within one (1) month of start date.
  • Willing and able to obtain Milwaukee County Lifeguard Certification prior to start date.
  • Willing and able to obtain American Heart Association BLS, CPR, and AED Certification within one (1) month of start date.
  • Willing and able to pass all in-service testing.
  • Able to meet and pass the requirements for the lifeguard physical test: Sign up HERE for the In-water training class.



NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbency. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.

Hourly Pay Range: $17.87 - $26.81
