DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of our roadways, especially during the challenging winter months when snow removal is essential. Your responsibilities extend well beyond plowing-you'll also support a wide range of construction and maintenance projects where your skill and attention to detail directly strengthen our transportation infrastructure. Each day offers hands-on, physically active work that underscores the importance of teamwork, communication, and dedication. In this position, you'll operate heavy equipment, perform minor repairs, and carry out routine maintenance to keep vehicles and machinery operating safely. You'll also complete accurate daily logs and reports that track equipment usage and service history, helping maintain smooth operations and accountability across the team. At the end of the day, you can take pride in knowing your efforts make travel safer and improve the quality of life for countless residents. Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Must possess a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • Employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders and two additional pieces of construction equipment within the probationary period.
  • Employees may require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment.
  • Employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
Additional Requirement:
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
