Position Summary

The Phlebotomist I supports laboratory operations by performing blood draws and specimen collection while ensuring accuracy, patient comfort, and compliance with laboratory and regulatory standards. This role may also assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities


  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.



  • Properly explain blood draw and specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.



  • Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test requirements.



  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes to ensure 100% accuracy.



  • Package and prepare specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity.



  • Store specimens at required temperatures and follow protocol-specific handling procedures.



  • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination, and update patient information as required.



  • Fully understand and follow physician orders and test requisitions.



  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DEP, and laboratory safety regulations.



  • Attend required annual department training sessions.



  • Answer incoming calls and provide laboratory results in response to inquiries as appropriate.




Minimum Qualifications


  • Valid Phlebotomy Certification for the state of employment (as required).



  • Minimum 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.



  • High School Diploma or GED required.



  • 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred.



  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.



  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently in a high-volume setting.
