Sr Director, Medicine Service Line

The Senior Director, Medicine Service Line is responsible for the management of programmatic development for a service line within the Inova health system. Provides operational support for the service line and related programs. Responsible for monitoring and evaluating Inova's patient care processes, service line outcomes and performance, and resource management. Responsible for fiscal and budgetary goals and management of service line programs. Leads service line administrative team and ensures proper work prioritization to accomplish the mission and vision of Inova's health system and the service line.

The Medicine Service Line includes divisions and sections of critical care medicine, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, palliative care and hospice, geriatrics, endocrinology, rheumatology, pulmonology, nephrology, infectious disease, dermatology, and allergy and immunology.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Growth & Program Development

  • Partner with the service line triad and leadership team to define and execute growth priorities.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop and implement business and expansion plans.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance service offerings and drive program innovation.

Operational & Performance Management

  • Oversee day-to-day operational performance of service line programs.
  • Monitor patient care processes, outcomes, and resource utilization to ensure high-quality, efficient delivery.
  • Analyze operational and financial data to inform decision-making and recommend improvements.

Financial Oversight

  • Manage service line budgets, including annual planning and long-range financial strategy.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs while maintaining or improving quality.
  • Ensure programs meet fiscal targets and contribute to overall system performance.

Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Apply Lean and project management methodologies to improve workflows, access, and patient outcomes.
  • Implement best practices to continuously enhance care delivery and operational effectiveness.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Collaborate with physicians, executives, and key stakeholders to align priorities and drive results.
  • Develop tools and processes to ensure effective communication across the service line and broader system.
  • Engage with community partners to support program growth and patient access.

Leadership & Governance

  • Ensure alignment of all initiatives with system-wide strategic goals.
  • Oversee assigned programs to ensure compliance, performance, and team effectiveness.
  • Support hiring, team development, and performance management as needed.
  • Participate in on-call leadership rotation to address operational escalations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 7 years related professional experience
  • 2 years management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience in a healthcare or hospital system
  • Demonstrated experience in contract management and negotiation, with strong financial acumen
  • Proven ability to operate effectively within highly matrixed, system-level environments
  • Experience leading and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to drive results
  • Excellent communication skills, with confidence in presenting work and engaging senior stakeholders
