The Chief Operating Officer (COO), Network Hospital Division, is a senior operational leadership role responsible for driving operational excellence across UCSF Health Network's community hospitals. Reporting to the COO, UCSF Health Network, this leader will oversee day-to-day hospital operations, performance improvement, and the delivery of high-quality inpatient care across UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital and UCSF Health Hyde Hospital.

UCSF Health Stanyan and UCSF Health Hyde are community hospitals that serve as essential access points for inpatient care in the UCSF Health Network. These hospitals provide a broad range of inpatient services, including medical, surgical, and rehabilitative care, and serve as a key bridge between community-level acute care needs and the advanced clinical capabilities of the broader UCSF Health academic medical enterprise. Together, they represent a critical component of the Network's ability to deliver integrated, high-quality care across the Bay Area.

The primary focus of this position is to drive elite operational performance across both hospital campuses - optimizing patient throughput, workforce deployment, and care quality while maintaining financial sustainability. The COO, Network Hospital Division will cultivate high-performing clinical and operational teams committed to exceptional patient experiences, strong medical and staff engagement, and consistent delivery of strong operational outcomes.

As a core member of the UCSF Health Network operations leadership team, this role will align hospital operational priorities with Network goals and collaborate closely with health system leaders to address complex operational and clinical challenges. This position carries significant accountability for hospital operational performance, safety, regulatory compliance, and financial results, with a clear understanding that operational excellence in the inpatient setting underpins the safety, quality, and reputation of the entire UCSF Health Network.

Yes Hospital Operations Excellence
  • Accountable for the clinical and operational performance of UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital and UCSF Health Hyde Hospital, including day-to-day operations, patient safety, clinical outcomes, financial performance, and patient and staff experience.
  • Oversee hospital operations to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centered inpatient care that meets or exceeds established performance targets.
  • Implement standardized operating procedures and best practices across both hospital campuses to ensure consistency in care delivery, patient flow, capacity management, and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for hospital operations, including inpatient capacity utilization, length of stay, patient throughput, occupancy rates, quality metrics, and patient experience scores.
  • Champion and lead the deployment of process improvement principles and methodologies across both hospitals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  • Oversee facility operations, capital projects, and infrastructure improvements to support safe, efficient clinical operations across both hospital campuses.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and that both hospitals maintain required accreditations and meet all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission standards.
  • Lead efforts to optimize staffing models, scheduling systems, and workforce deployment across both hospitals to maximize efficiency while delivering world-class patient outcomes.
  • Partner with hospital medical staff leadership to optimize physician alignment, medical staff engagement, and clinical care delivery effectiveness.

Yes Capacity Management and Patient Flow
  • Drive initiatives to optimize inpatient capacity utilization, patient throughput, and bed management across Stanyan and Hyde hospitals.
  • Collaborate with the COO, Network Ambulatory Division and VP, Patient Access to ensure seamless transitions of care between inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Develop and execute strategies to address capacity constraints and support the broader Network's ability to accept and manage patient volume growth.
  • Lead operational planning to support the expansion of inpatient service capabilities in alignment with Network strategic priorities.

Yes Collaborative Leadership
  • Partner closely with the CMO, Hospital Division and the CNO, UCSF Health Network to ensure seamless integration of clinical, nursing, and operational priorities across both hospitals.
  • Collaborate with the COO, Network Ambulatory Division to ensure care coordination and operational continuity across the inpatient-to-ambulatory care continuum.
  • Work collaboratively with UCSF Health enterprise leaders to align hospital operations with system-wide standards, quality improvement initiatives, and strategic goals.
  • Direct the development and management of operating and capital budgets for both hospital campuses and assigned operational areas.

  • Develop and implement a performance management system to track, analyze, and improve operational metrics across both hospital campuses.
  • Benchmark hospital performance against community hospital industry best practices to identify opportunities and drive peak performance.
  • Lead operational turnaround and improvement initiatives for underperforming areas across either hospital campus.
  • Proactively identify and address operational barriers that impact patient access, safety, experience, or clinical outcomes.
