Department Information
The Horticulturalist II leads educational programming and experiential learning initiatives within the campus community garden while ensuring the overall health, functionality, and upkeep of the space. This role combines hands-on horticultural management with environmental education focused on horticulture, composting systems, soil science, food systems, and related natural science topics.

The position is responsible for maintaining the garden to a high standard while fostering a culture of learning, stewardship, and volunteer engagement. The ideal candidate is both a skilled horticultural practitioner and an enthusiastic educator who can translate garden operations into meaningful learning experiences for students, classes, and campus groups.

Job Summary

Provide professional expertise and leadership in the management of tree, shrub, groundcover and flowers planting, growth and maintenance within an assigned campus area. Includes selection and purchase of plants, materials and supplies. Position is responsible for setting employee goals, assessing employee performance and providing feedback, and making pay recommendations. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: Facilities management and supervisors, landscaping management, vendors and contractors, campus planning management. This position typically will advise and counsel: Facilities, landscaping and campus planning management. This position will supervise: grounds keeping personnel.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Develop and implement horticultural plans and work programs.

Job Duty 2 -
Oversee landscape development and maintenance activities including providing work instruction and inspection of completed assignments.

Job Duty 3 -
Select and purchase landscape related materials and supplies.

Job Duty 4 -
Supervise the application of pesticides and other chemicals in maintaining landscape and grounds.

Job Duty 5 -
Select, hire and train grounds keeping personnel; monitor work performance.

Job Duty 6 -
Prepare landscape related reports and presentations.

Job Duty 7 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience
Three to four years of job related experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires working knowledge of horticultural professional principles and practices including the use of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles, landscape design, turf management, plant selection and cultivation. Skills in supervision/leadership and landscape maintenance management are required as is the use of office related computer applications.

Salary range: up to $52,000.00 / annually
