Job Purpose

The Director, Learning & Capability is a strategic partner to the Head of Learning & Capability, driving the end-to-end Capability Plan for Development Operations - with a core focus on Pipeline Project Management. They own delivery of key plan components and build and execute a forward-looking capability strategy anchored in the Dev Ops Strategic Workforce Plan and Horizon27. Working closely with change leaders across Dev Ops, this role anticipates emerging capability needs and translates them into high-impact learning strategies, programs, and experiences.

Key responsibilities:
  • Lead capability gap analysis and needs assessment in partnership with the Head of Learning & Capability, and co-own the annual L&C plan with a particular focus on Pipeline Project Management

  • Design and deliver targeted capability development plans for identified learning needs across Dev Ops - including Pipeline Project Management - working in close partnership with functional stakeholders.

  • Build and maintain cross-functional partnerships across R&D - including Written Standards & Compliance Learning, Therapy Area Heads, and Capability leaders - to align priorities, standardise approaches, and unlock synergies.

  • Manage external vendors to ensure high-quality, cost-effective delivery of capability development programmes and SOP learning solutions, maintaining clear scope and accountability.

  • Partner with Dev Ops functional leaders and Therapy Area Heads to conduct regular organisational capability assessments and surface strategic skill gaps.

  • Design, launch, and embed capability-building frameworks that standardise ways of working across Dev Ops, Pipeline Project Management, Therapy Areas, and the Learning & Capability team

  • Define, track, and report on L&C metrics, KPIs, and compliance data to demonstrate impact, ensure accountability, and drive continuous improvement

  • Drive adoption of modern, high-impact learning modalities - including AI-powered tools, microlearning, curated playlists, and platforms such as connectGSK - to maximise reach, relevance, and learner engagement

  • Champion a culture of continuous learning and knowledge-sharing across Development Operations, ensuring insights and lessons learned are systematically captured, communicated, and connected to organisational goals

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, adult education, Scientific fields or business administration

  • Extensive experience in a large pharma organization

  • Deep expertise in clinical operations

  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing adult learning solutions

  • Proven matrix leadership skills with a track record of leading diverse teams to develop solutions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Translates strategic plan into operational plans and guides execution.

  • Proven ability to build relationships, influence decisions and drive results through partnership

  • Professional training and experience in project and/or change management

  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and the ability to discern when to act independently

  • Strong positive can-do attitude and comfortable interacting with levels higher-up in a matrix organization

  • Proactive problem-solving skills

  • Highly effective communicator (spoken, written, listener)

  • Must be self-directed and highly motivated and understand where to apply efforts to achieve the most significant business outcome

  • Proactively and independently manage a high-volume workload to a consistently high standard, by setting priorities, objectives and target dates.

  • Own and manage complex projects and activities
