Job Overview

The Orthopedic Technician is responsible for the full care of pediatric orthopedic patients and function independently to manage patient flow, casting, bracing and application of durable medical equipment. They perform delegated activities and assume responsibilities as outlined in the unlicensed assistive personnel competency guideline, orthopedic competency guidelines and the orthopedic technician training curriculum. The Orthopedic Technician helps assists professional staff (RNs, Physicians, NPs, PAs) in managing the healthcare and support needs of orthopedic patients and families in a clinic/hospital/emergency department setting.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Completes all the essential functions of the Orthopedic Technician Entry role and be able to demonstrate a higher level of casting, skill, and overall knowledge of complex pediatric orthopedic patients.
  • Identifies patient/family learning needs, readiness to learn and utilizes appropriate teaching strategies while providing interventions in compliance with current hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrates accountability for care provided.
  • Understands the roles within the multidisciplinary team providing family centered patient care while maintaining objective and professional boundaries.
  • Follows guidelines and documents the process to provide developmentally appropriate care to infants and children with complex health care needs and the plans of care in implementing patient/family care.
  • Performs care of the moderate to complex orthopedic patient requiring knowledge of anatomy and physiology and bone structure.
  • Verbalizes hospital and departmental measures for evaluating clinical practice, including knowledge of the goals of the department, division and organization, the quality improvement process and the location of policies, procedures, and guidelines for practice.
  • Demonstrates application of basic upper and lower extremity casts, as outlined in the essential functions of an Orthopedic Technician Entry, demonstrates the application of hand-based specialty casts (ulnar/radial gutter, cobra, mitten) as well as an application of a Muenster and PTB casts.
  • Assists in ordering and maintain of specialty supplies for network of care areas as well as primary sites as applicable.
  • Explains and educates others about the care of immobilization devises to patients and families using age-appropriate guidelines, under the direction of the physician or midlevel provider.
  • Aids new staff, fellows, and learners within orthopedics.
  • Follows and teaches guidelines for responsibilities for care delivery, organizational skills, to include prioritization and time management of clinic flow.
  • Manages room utilization and organization, independently can troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and/or report for resolution. May be involved in new site development and planning, as well as development of education materials.

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $22.42 to $33.63
