The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Materials Technology is currently recruiting for a Bridge Testing Technician (Transportation Engineering Technician III) in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.

Nature of Work: The main purpose of a Bridge Testing Technician is to assist the Bridge Team Crew Chief in performing bridge deck and substructure condition survey activities statewide. This position is responsible for assisting the Crew Chief who is leading and directing Bridge Survey Crew members in conducting testing, collecting samples and data, drawing using Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software, drafting reports, analyzing data, and submitting for review. The Bridge Testing Technician is responsible for assisting the Crew Chief, who leads and directs the crew in specialized testing, including nondestructive testing (NDT) using 3D GPR on bridges and pavements, evaluating data, and drafting reports. This role also assists with reviewing consultant work and providing progress reports. Additionally, the Bridge Testing Technician performs bridge condition surveys with limited supervision and reports directly to the Bridge Team Crew Chief.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.

Selective Qualification: One and a half (1.5) years of experience in bridge deck testing, or transportation infrastructure inspection, or pavement and bridge maintenance.

*A Selective Qualification is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective Qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill or ability).

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess one or more of the following:
  • Knowledge of the principles of basic mathematics and ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Basic Knowledge of Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) using MicroStation.
  • Basic Knowledge of Temporary Traffic Control Standards and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Basic Knowledge of Federal Highway Regulations and Criteria for In-Service Bridge conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and ability to learn basic functions on computer and keyboard.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and in a team setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in engineering, construction management or surveying or surveying technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the required experience.

Licenses & Certifications

* Candidate must posses a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
* Candidate must possess/obtain a Temporary Traffic Control Manager Certification within the probationary period.


Additional Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to routinely travel statewide on overnight stays of up to two (2) weeks for data collection.
  • Available to work extended hours during the work week and occasionally during the weekend for data collection.
