Responsible for the assessment of respiratory patients with acute and chronic illnesses, to ensure delivery of clinically appropriate respiratory care procedures as prescribed by the medical staff for neonate, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients.

The Clinical Respiratory Therapist II serves as a role model and resource providing clinical leadership and service coordination that assures consistently high-quality care and facilitating continuous improvement in respiratory care services.

The Clinical Respiratory Therapist II is responsible for providing patient care and assessment; interdisciplinary consultation; staff, patient, family, and community education; and performance monitoring.

  2. Competently performs the following professional respiratory care services to patients as ordered by the physician:
    1. Ventilator management
    2. Blood gas interpretation
    3. Airway management (stabilization and clearance)
    4. Emergency/trauma response
    5. Delivery of all gases associated with cardiovascular compromise
    6. Inhaled medication delivery including indications and contraindications and side-effects
  3. Follows Respiratory Care procedures consistently to ensure safe care including:
    1. Prioritization of workload
    2. Critical thinking
    3. Accurate charting
    4. Communication with other members of the team
  4. Functions as a shift Team Leader, supporting peers and management to provide optimal, effective and efficient respiratory care, including:
    1. Maintaining clinical expertise in all of the critical care areas
    2. May be used as preceptor to employees and students

  1. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, review of current literature, attendance at workshops and in-services
  2. Attend department meetings
  3. Performs other duties as assigned or requested

  • Minimum one year experience
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively within intra and inter departmental teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive and positive working relationships with internal and external customers and co-workers.
  • Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position, including, but not limited to:
    • Expert knowledge of clinical respiratory care assessment and therapeutic modalities for the clinical area(s) assigned.
    • Expert knowledge and experience in the application of ventilator support.
    • Patient and family education
    • Experience in planning and conducting Inservice education and training
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations as needed
