RTOS Development Engineer

Your Role

Wind River, An Aptiv Company, is seeking an RTOS Development Engineer to contribute to the development of Wind River's next-generation real-time operating system. This is a unique opportunity to design, implement, and validate core OS functionality while developing hands-on expertise in real-time, embedded, and safety-critical software systems.

You will work alongside experienced OS engineers and cross-functional teams to build production-grade RTOS technologies. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer with a strong academic foundation in operating systems and hands-on experience implementing kernels, schedulers, synchronization primitives, or other low-level system functionality.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Contribute to the design and implementation of core operating system components with guidance from experienced engineers.
• Develop high-quality, maintainable code and automated tests within an Agile and CI/CD development environment.
• Investigate, debug, and resolve issues identified during testing or reported by internal engineering teams.
• Create clear technical documentation for software designs and implementations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware, tools, and verification, to support system integration and validation.
• Learn and apply engineering best practices for real-time, embedded, and safety-critical software development.

Your Background

• Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, System Design, or a related field, with 0-3 years of relevant experience, including internships, co-ops, or academic project work.
• Strong knowledge of operating system concepts, including threads and scheduling, real-time scheduling, synchronization, memory management, virtual memory, interrupts, and concurrency.
• Excellent C programming skills with hands-on experience implementing OS-level concepts through academic, internship, co-op, robotics, embedded systems, or other relevant projects.
• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with familiarity with Linux/Unix development environments and Git or similar version control systems.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, curiosity about low-level systems, and demonstrated ability to learn and take ownership of technical projects.
• Experience with embedded or real-time systems, robotics, IoT, drivers, interrupts, hardware interaction, Assembly, C++, Python, performance analysis, or concurrency debugging is preferred.
• Familiarity with real-time constraints such as latency, determinism, and deadlines, as well as software development practices including testing, CI/CD, and code reviews, is preferred.

Compensation

The compensation range for this role is $100,000 to $135,000 USD plus an annual incentive plan bonus. Compensation is determined through interviews and a review of the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, abilities, and internal equity.

Successful candidates must engage in a security clearance process in regard to their citizenship in order to perform fundamental job duties, as per applicable law.
