Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Manager, Claims Administration
for the Department of Risk Management and Insurance. This position is responsible for administering assigned workers' compensation, general liability, auto liability, auto physical damage, and employment practices liability claims from incident through resolution. The Manager, Claims Administration exercises independent judgment in evaluating claims, coordinating investigations, working with Rutgers' Third-Party Administrator, internal departments, legal counsel, insurance carriers, medical providers, and other stakeholders, and recommending appropriate claim handling, resolution, reporting, and loss prevention strategies.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Administers assigned workers' compensation claims, including investigation, compensability review, settlement of routine workers' compensation claims within delegated authority, litigation support, and coordinating with Rutgers' Third-Party Administrator and Rutgers' Occupational Health Department, billing/collection dispute resolution, statutory reporting, return-to-work coordination, recovery and subrogation, line negotiation, excess reporting, Medicare/Medicaid coordination, and fraud prevention review.
- Manages assigned general liability, auto liability, and auto physical damage claims, including initial review, investigation, documentation, coordination with internal departments, Third-Party Administrator oversight, and claim resolution recommendations.
- Coordinates employment practices liability claim support in partnership with the Assistant Director, internal and external legal counsel, and other appropriate University offices.
- Monitors accident alerts, police reports, incident reports, claim databases, and other reporting systems in real time to identify potential claims, activate appropriate claim response, and ensure timely escalation.
- Supervises the Administrative Coordinator assigned to Risk Management & Insurance, including assigning work, setting priorities, training, monitoring work quality, and providing input on performance management.
- Identifies claim trends, recommends loss prevention and cost containment strategies, and supports implementation of operational improvements across workers' compensation, auto liability, general liability, and related claim areas.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, risk management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five (5) years of claims, insurance, worker's compensation, or risk management experience.

- Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and/or Associate in Risk Management (ARM) professional designations.
- A valid driver's license would be required for this position.

- Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple complex claims and projects simultaneously while exercising sound professional judgment and maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Comprehensive knowledge of workers' compensation claims administration, general liability, auto liability, insurance principles, medical terminology, OSHA reporting requirements, and applicable federal and New Jersey laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues, identify appropriate solutions, and make recommendations regarding claim handling, cost containment, and risk reduction.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, government agencies, legal counsel, insurance carriers, medical providers, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to establish priorities, manage competing deadlines, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development through insurance education or professional designations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, claims management systems, databases, and other technology used to administer and monitor claims.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience working for a large, complex, self-insured organization, public entity, institution of higher education, or governmental agency subject to the New Jersey Tort Claims Act or similar statutes.
- Advanced knowledge of New Jersey Workers' Compensation law, OSHA reporting requirements, Medicare Secondary Payer requirements, subrogation, lien resolution, and other applicable claims administration requirements.
- Experience managing or overseeing workers' compensation, general liability, auto liability, and employment practices liability claims in collaboration with a Third-Party Administrator (TPA), insurance carrier, or self-insured employer.
- Professional insurance designation such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Associate in Claims (AIC), or similar credential.
- Experience supervising staff, leading projects, or coordinating cross-functional teams.
- Experience developing claims reporting, identifying loss trends, implementing process improvements, or recommending cost containment strategies.
