What to Expect
The Service TPT (Tooling Process Training) Engineering team is responsible for design-to-production of custom service and commissioning tooling and sustaining solutions for Tesla Energy storage and charging. This role owns the specification, design prioritization, field sustainment, and release readiness of the hardware used by Energy Service technicians. This person keeps those hours in field optimized via owning field failures, technician feedback, and reman findings into a ranked spec and a field process - hardware that is comfortable, serviceable on the ground, and ready to build more of. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm for where innovation meets energy storage.
What You'll Do
- Field gear specifications and design prioritization:Own the technical specification and the priority stack for the body-worn data-collection system and its sub-assemblies: Examples of hardware to spec and test; harness definition (connector pinout, shielding, strain relief, bend radius, length, bundling), power interface (battery mount, fuse protection, cross-platform compatibility), and sensor-chain integrity (camera, IMU, tactile, current sense). Turn the issue log, end-of-shift technician feedback, and reman teardowns into a ranked roadmap - failure mode, subsystem, and blocked collection hours - that ME and EE execute. Handshake electrical, mechanical, and firmware changes
- Field representation:Be the engineering interface to technicians, hub teams, and reman. Read how the tools are actually used and how it fails across a service day: cable pinch and snag, connector back-out, camera and IMU dropouts, battery sag, and hard-hat, eyewear, and headset interference. Use that evidence to keep revision scope tied to the physics and the repeat rate, stop one-off fixes from accumulating on the fleet
- Ground-level sustainment:Own the service specification and the documents that let the field repair tooling hardware instead of shipping it back. Define fault isolation a technician can run on site, and the replace-versus-reman boundary per sub-assembly. Specify kitting, bagging, documentation, shipping, storage so matched items stay together ECU config, memory and cable, battery and fuse. Cut time-zero failures so hardware that left the hub is still functional at the start of the shift, and simple electrical and mechanical faults never leave the site
- Release readiness:Technically gate every solution before an end user sees it. A revision does not ship until it meets spec on fit, interconnect, power, and sensor function, and until work instructions, training, and the firmware/config compatibility matrix ship with it. The gate includes config and plug match, firmware-to-ECU match, and a self-test path with unambiguous fault indication, so an operator is not debugging an IMU chain, tactile channel, or camera link in the field
- Week-to-week performance:Own the control loop. Each week, report gear uptime, a downtime Pareto by subsystem and failure mode (power, harness, glove IMU and tactile, camera, PPE and fit), and coded technician feedback. Baseline each service procedure against the same work done in the gear, track that delta week to week, and drive out whatever is slowing the technician or the collection shift - a spec change, a procedure, or a cut-in
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or equivalent experience
- 3-5 years on electromechanical hardware that real users wear, carry, or service - user interfacing sensors, harnesses, camera or IMU rigs, battery-powered devices, or service tooling - with at least one spec or design released to a fielded fleet
- Able to write and defend a gear spec across the stack you will be judged on: mechanical (CAD review, wearable fit, fasteners, design for assembly, service, and transport), electrical (connectors, cable assemblies, power protection, basic signal integrity), and software-adjacent (firmware and config compatibility, sensor health, fault codes). You review and hold the design. You do not have to be the person in CAD or writing firmware every day
- Demonstrated path from a failure Pareto to a closed loop: structured root cause, a piloted revision, a clean cut-in, and a before/after metric on yield, uptime, or hours unblocked
- Able to run several workstreams at once (PPE integration, harness, procedures, retrofit) and rank them by blocked collection hours and repeat-issue rate
- Precise communication with field technicians and with ME, EE, firmware, AI/ML team, reman, and leadership. Comfortable putting a spec, the tradeoff, and a ship or no-ship call in a weekly program or executive review - including whether training, firmware, and procedures are actually ready
- Nice to have: multi-camera or IMU time sync, tactile or force sensing, self-test or end-of-line definition, contract-manufacturer harness handoff, embedded config management, or energy or automotive service hardware
