What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Test Engineer to contribute to the continuous improvement of Manufacturing Test Equipment for the Semi Factory Production Engineering team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in designing, developing, and optimizing test equipment for Tesla Semi's powertrain production lines. You will also be responsible for supporting electrical, software, and controls debugging tasks, as well as the continuous improvement of test and automation equipment. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the fastest-growing groups within Tesla, working in an innovative environment where all ideas for improvement, development, and enhancement are welcomed.

What You'll Do
  • Develop and enhance test equipment hardware and software in both individual and team settings
  • Demonstrate proficiency in scripting in Python, Golang, or another high-level programming language (C, C++, C#, Java, etc.)
  • Possess a good understanding of SQL databases and queries to efficiently manage and analyze test data
  • Collaborate with the production team to understand the production constraints related to testing
  • Work closely with design teams to define optimized test specifications that balance yield and quality
  • Assist in the mechanical and electrical design of the test equipment itself, with a focus on HV power electronics and battery systems
  • Support debug and validation efforts to ensure the sustained performance of the equipment
  • Take responsibility for fully documenting all aspects of the projects you work on, ensuring clear and comprehensive documentation

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 2 years of relevant industry experience in test equipment development and optimization
  • Familiarity with LabView is beneficial but not as prevalent as Python and Golang in current projects
  • Exposure to a wide variety of test and automation systems, production machinery, industrial sensors, analog & digital signal acquisition, safety, and I/O devices (i.e., pogo-pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers, current and power meters, etc.)
  • Solid understanding of communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, and RS232
  • Experience with HV power electronics and battery systems is highly desirable
  • Experience in designing electrical hardware and software, with a particular emphasis on operator and product safety
  • Solid understanding of production equipment design issues, including user-friendliness, serviceability, ruggedness, and noninvasive electrical test connections
  • Basic proficiency in PLC programming and troubleshooting (e.g., Siemens)
  • Ability to work well under pressure, managing competing demands and tight deadlines effectively
  • Willingness to support 24/7 operations as needed
