Job Summary

The CMO is responsible for the direction, planning, and coordination of all medical-related activities; establishes and implements standards for medical practices and policies. Participates in the education of medical staff including interns and residents, if applicable. Reports to the CEO.

The Chief Medical Officer is an experienced physician with demonstrated leadership skills who acts as a liaison between hospital administration, affiliate partners, and medical staff providing oversight and direction, to the coordination of patient care services, the quality department, and physician matters. They collaborate with both administration and physicians to ensure quality patient care is being delivered to Sonoma Valley.

Involves oversight of medical operations for subsidiary hospital, ensuring patients receive the highest quality clinical care. Provides physician leadership for Sonoma Valley Hospital and acts as liaison between doctors and other healthcare executives. Implements safe, cost-effective, efficient medical interventions and ensures seamless medical care across inpatient units and ambulatory sites. Develops and / or facilitates quality measurements for clinical programs; monitors and improves quality and safety metrics. Establishes and monitors compliance with regulations required by external regulatory agencies, state, and other accreditation bodies. Responsible for subsidiary hospital physician workforce planning and physician recruitment, evaluation and training. Assists subsidiary hospital in resolving problems and questions of policy as they relate to the medical staff and patient care. Coordinates activities of the subsidiary hospital medical staff, and assures compliance with medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in business, health administration or clinical degree and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • MD or equivalent.
  • Current CA State Medical License, Board Certification in relevant specialty.
  • Master's Degree in business, health administration or clinical degree preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years in medical practice with two (2) or more years experience with acute care hospital functions and leadership.
  • General acute care hospital medicine and surgery knowledge base, familiarity with hospital based specialties and all hospital departments, quality metrics design and interpretation, and community needs and resources. demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead change initiatives, and to promote solid interpersonal relationships while making objective decisions and gaining consensus among a diverse audience including physicians and staff. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to handle the executive management responsibilities in a subsidiary hospital.
  • Expert knowledge of health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, program development implementation and organizational development.
  • Possesses a highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with medical center management, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions.
  • Expert ability to establish and utilize clinic metrics to drive excellence, support operations and facilitate integration.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in sensitive situations that may involve public scrutiny.
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills. Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organization goals.

Preferred Qualifications

Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques preferred but not required.
